Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Great video altogether. Joe St.Leger there with his yellow mack and tripod - no doubt Roches Stores bags nearby.

I think that video is the actually first time I've ever seen an image of Joe on board a train as distinct to him being trackside. Wonderful stuff altogether and thank you to Oscar Bravo for posting it :)

New Siemens 125mph Tier 4 passenger diesel on test in Pueblo, Colorado

4601 is hauling some Kawasaki bilevels also rated to that speed owned by MARC (Maryland-DC commuter rail). Michael Cahill, head honcho of Siemens Rolling Stock North America who pops up here is a 1989 UCD graduate.

Some of the other units are en route to Maryland for high speed testing on the Northeast Corridor, where they will replace AEM7 and HHP8 electric locomotives. These will also operate in Washington/Oregon, California, Illinois on Amtrak-State services replacing federally owned P42DC locomotives and some State owned F59PHIs, and a modified version with a sharp nose on the private Brightline service in Florida.

As far as Maryland MARC goes, it's going to be an utter waste once the AEM-7s go (which Amtrak will no longer service due to switching over to the Siemens-built ACS-64s and also no longer having the contract for operating the Penn Line service), because the Penn Line (MARC's local Northeast Corridor/former Pennsylvania RR commuter service) will be changed to all diesel and take no advantage of the overhead wires.

BTW, thanks to US (federal) crash-strength regulations, the Siemens Charger's weight is up to 120 tonnes (30 tonnes per axle). These smaller-capacity engines rev much higher than older two-stroke diesels too, so let's see what the laws of thermodynamics do to them.

Those Canadian National Geeps have some years on them, even with the number of times they were rebuilt. Like I said, let's see if the Siemens locos with Cummins engines can get up to the same age.

19 minutes of 90s Irish rail loco's /coaching stock recorded in Newbridge in October 1994, has an A class hauling freight at the end.

think that has already happened, or nearly so. MARC is borrowing Amtrak P42DCs now, although I believe the odd Amtrak AEM7AC can occasionally be spotted.

The problem is that MARC in addition to depending on Amtrak to maintain the locos were also their customer for power, and Amtrak electricity ain't cheap. It would make sense for MBTA to make the Providence Line electric, but for much the same reasons are keeping things diesel. Because of the tyranny of CSX et al, neither system has any near term prospect of their other lines becoming electrified so all-diesel helps with flexibility of equipment scheduling and in MARCs case interoperating with VRE.

Don't think we've seen enough of large Cummins rail power to say one way or another, but NJT are tendering to rebuild the Cat C175s in their Bombardier dual modes already...

This rare bird was sold at auction tonight for €480 (+ Buyer's Premium). Looks like it came out of a ditch rather than somebody's collection.

Siemens Charger 4604 doing high speed testing on the Northeast Corridor in New Jersey, assisted by an electric ACS-64. The diesel is the one with the bright light on its side, the engine bay lighting showing through the side vents.

That coupling-up was lethal and typical of some of the sloppiness prevalent at the time. I seem to remember that some poor sod was almost cut in half between two laminates at Heuston some years ago. Remember that accidents like Buttevant and Cherryville don't just happen by divine intervention and it's the same old story of familiarity breeding contempt.

Those look like the JŽ (today ŽS) 666 class (interesting number), which are JT22CW-2s, mechanically similar to the 071 class although built with full car bodies rather than the hood configuration that the Irish locos have, and for 1435 mm track gauge.

It's hard to see a lot of the English stuff selling ,a lot of pretty generic stuff , although nothing surprises me when it comes to railway heads.

However, there could be a bidding war for Lot 292.

One bid at a time, gentlemen, no pushing at the back..........

The thought struck me too but the guy who collected was a long time collector. I passed on a Waterford, Dungatvan & Lismore gate sign last week that was in a Tipperary sale. Probably genuine, but I wasn't prepared to bid without being able to do a hands on inspection.

Lot 75 is a fake, it depends on where the screw holes are in lot 77 to determine if it is genuine or not. Many many different variants of both of these have been reproduced, and it is a bit worrying to see them being passed off as genuine!

The ongoing work on 141 and 134 is leading to some beautiful music.

Jaysus that would bring a tear to a glass eye. The Facebook post says it's the first time B141 has started in preservation but didn't it go to whitehead aswell as that tour on the mainline or was that B142 in whitehead ?

It's nice to see the two old girls sounding great but I'd be right in saying that 134 will need a lick of paint at some point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,756 ✭✭✭flyingsnail

Its probably just poor wording. Both 141 and 134 have been started before (in Connolly shed), this was the first time they worked in multiple.
They were still in Irish rail hands when they worked the tour. 142 is the loco in Whitehead, 141 did not go North.

Nice to know 134 is finally back in action to some degree. :)

I no longer pay close attention to preservation minutiae, but can somebody confirm how many 121-class locomotives have been preserved - surely a pair?

The RPSI has 134 currently at Connolly shed and the ITG has 124 currently at Moyasta

Are the remainder of the 121's scrapped or up at Inchicore?

ya all gone, I think the last one to be scrapped was 123
