Coin Dealers in Dublin

I've had a look at the Golden Pages and it lists these few:

Bygone Days, Arcade Market, Georges St.
The Collector Den, Powerscourt SC
The Collectors Shop, Blackrock Market, Main St
Cultural Collection of Ireland, Fitzwilliam Square
and then a bloke called Mike Kelly with just a phone number.

The one in the Arcade Market is just the little stall mostly selling books, and then with a box of coins, isn't it?

Anyone tell me what the others are like? From their names, they presumably don't specialise in coins and maybe just have a little box full of them. The Cultural Collection of Ireland sounds interesting though. What is that?

Thanks Bernard. I actually have been buying US gold coins, old key date coins, on ebay. I've had good experiences buying on ebay but make sure that the grade is clearly identfied before you bid.

ahhh,....... I'd be very cautious about coins on ebay !!!

just make sure that you are experienced enough to spot the fakes.
The better the fakes,..the more money the faker reaps, and they are pretty good at it.

gold is gold,... so thats a good start, but the ancient coins are heavily faked.

provinence is helpful,.. and buying from somebody like "Spinks" you know you are getting the real deal,...but you will have to pay a lot extra !

The dealers here are just a shower of chancers, you'll find the decent ones all come from either the North or England. Theres a big coin fair coming up in October at the RDS where there'll be dealers from the UK. I specialise in Irish coins, if theres anything you need to know about them give me a shout. I know a little bit about Roman coins too but thats as far as it goes.

Just read the replies.

Some are a bit unfair - its obvious that the people hadn't been to the collectors shop in blackrock. Labelling all Irish coin dealers as a bunch of chancers is particularly unfair and inaccurate. Many of them have been dealing for several decadres and have a solid knowledge of their subject.

Furthermore, when you see an eBay dealer selling a 1954 halfcrown for $175 and describes it as a "key date" you know you have to be very careful when buying via the internet.

This guy has a good stock of Irish, British and European coins. He trades every weekend - as opposed to the many dealers that turn up twice a year at the RDS Coin Fair with their inflated prices.

I visit the collectors shop every two weeks and always find something. His prices are keen and he actually knows a bit about his coins. I suggest you all try visiting his shop.

You get to see the coins and examine them at your leisure. You also get a personalised service from someone that makes time for all collectors and answers their questions. He is especially polite to children and there is always a parent with child in his shop whenever I visit.

For those outside the big smoke you have the O'Donnell fairs that do some major town and cities about twice a year.
As for ripping off/chancers you must remember, it's from a buyers point of view. All buyers want to buy coins for €€ and sell for €€€€. Dealers have to have a mark up on the coins they buy, it called making a profit just like your local pub or shop.
Ignorance is another thing, collectors should school themselves for there hobby, it normally pays off:D:D:D

Hi Lads
My mother is interested in getting a large number of old irish coins valued; my father collected them over his life time but never knew their true value.
Could you recommend a honest dealer to make a valuation, and maybe advise what she should do; bring a few coins, a whole box?; catalogue them, but there's a large number of coins and it would take ages?
I live in Australia and I am trying to get some information for her and I would appreciate your advice.

The first thing to do is to tell her leave them as they are, don't clean them, don't do anything to them. Leave them as they are.
I would make a list of the coins and books etc of the collection, if she knows what they are, if not there are cheap referance books available in easons to help her out. Also the prices in these books are what you would be expected to pay not what you will get if you sell them, also read to read the prices from left to right not jump to coins listed UNC/FDC more than likely the condition of the coins are in the first 2 prices lsted for "F" fine and "VF" Very fine. If they are pre decimal 1928 to 1969 and if the coins are like new they are worth a lot, only the 1943 halfcrown 2/6 and florin 2s in used condition are worth more.

For what its worth, Brian in Bygone Days in Georges st arcade, is good. I have had dealings with him over the years and his predecessor was also ok. No chancer at all and the books are a good distraction too if you can sneak them back into the house adding to ones clutter.

Worth a visit if you have enough time to chat with him, and rummage through his stuff in the boxes all around the stall. Hes a good one for sure, fountain of knowledge.

You mention the 1943 half crown, just found one in a box of coins at home, what would you say that's worth??? Actually there must be a couple of hundred coins here, ranging in condition, lots of English and Irish pennies, 1895, 1897, 1902, 1904. There are also lots of coins with very little markings, just pronounced edges. American silver dollars, should I get these valued???

Just in case theres any confusion, it's the Irish half crown with the horse of 1943 that's quite valuable. However it's all about condition, they would generally start from around 150 Euro upwards to a few thousand Euro for an uncirculated example. If you post a clear scan of both sides of this coin I can give you a proper valuation on it. If it's English forget it.

Well it has definitely been circulated, it is not shining new or anything like it, it's quite dark, but yes it is the 1943 coin with the horse on it, i'll try to scan on a couple of pics tomorrow

Look them up yourself at www.irishcoinage.com .

Prices go by condition, I suspect your coins won't be UNCirculated unless your dad was a serious collector, so you will have to work all that out for yourself. Theres a grading guide on the site too. Or just bring them into any coin dealer and they'll tell you if theres anything of value there.

Check out eBay to get an idea of what price similar coins are fetching. There is a Canadian eBay site www.ebay.ca and checking tonight there were more than 2,000 Canadian coins listed on it with 100 under the heading of gold. Check it out on eBay in general as well. Don't sell it to an Irish dealer as you are unlikely to get anything worthwhile for it.

Hery guys,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a 1866 British Gold Half Soveriegn in excellent condition. I have no idea how much it's worth & want to get it valued to put on my house insurance. Can anyone recommend a dealer who will give a fair valuation on the coin & not just try to rip me off by under-valuing it.

There is a number at the bottom of the sheild, so some are worth more than others to a collector. I don't have this book so don't know.
I have seen this type, not date in EF for €90.

First of all, If you found it, it belongs to the state and not to you. Report your find to the National Museum and where you found it, they will advise the correct action to take.

Values in 2003 Spinks 6494 F £450, VF £1500. This is the price you would expect to pay for such a coin if you wanted to buy it. Selling it to a dealers you would get half that. An Auction would be your best option to sell.

He found it in the UK not here. There was contemporary brass imitations which are still interesting and not a bad price for around $80 on that site you linked. His however is the genuine silver one.

I have thousands of old coins collected by my grandmother, I doubt there are any extremely rare coins but it is a large collection none the less. I was wondering what to do with them? Im not really interested in going through them all and trying to find values, is there any place that will take them and give me some money for them?

If they are 1969 to 2000 the central bank will take them as long as they are bagged 1 penny * 100 £1, 2 pence * 50 etc, etc.
You will get face value £1 = €1.27 (if you have uk 1p and 2p you can throw them in as well

If you have uncirculated decimal hold on to them.
Everything else check for Irish 1943 florins and Halfcrowns, they are worth some thing, every thing else there is a couple of dealers or auction rooms around the country who will sell these for you. You would normally expect to get more at an auction than you would from a dealer.
If you have uncirculated hold on to them.
Now all your uncirculated coins, google dublin coin auctions and he will advise on what is worth selling. You should get more at a coin auctions that a regular auctions.

Well there are key dates in both decimal and pre decimal, some of the 1986's and the 1985 20p for example. I went through a few thousand pounds worth of decimals and pre's and bagged them by type and date and it took me a few days alright but I got some nice finds in there including some nice error coins. Also I then had lots of complete date runs of all the coins. You might be better off selling them to a dealer or put them up for auction as one lot if you aren't willing to go through them yourself and you don't know exactly what to be looking out for. I wouldn't cash them in at the central bank though. It depends really, it could be all junk, I'd know at a quick glance what your chances of success are if I saw them.

Sort them first by type then by date and when you're ready you can ask what to look for. When you have them stacked in little piles, look out for edge errors, you'll see immeditately if theres an odd one out. Like for example the milled edge pound coins. But same goes for all types, you might find some of the milled type coins have an odd smooth edge one etc. Look for anything weird that could be an error, double strikes etc etc.

I can tell you those Irish ones are worth very little, hardly even worth putting a value on them. Those Half crowns aren't actually silver.

yes its in the bag from the mint and has the mint seal,error on last mesg there from 1968.
