Have a feel, they need to be kind of firm. Pro tip: If you are in danger of being belted round the head with Lidl flowers for Valentines Day, buy some tissue paper (not bog roll) and ribbon and re-wrap them.

If you wanna get flowers from a florist for Valentines go in now and order them. My mams a florist, prices go up closer to the day as wholesaler prices go up also(depending on the wholesaler the price can go up by 300%). Especially if you want to buy flowers on Valentines day. 12 roses now should be around €60ish, expect to pay €90-120 near the day...

Regarding freshness of flowers, most florists put in one order a week and they generally come over the weekend so the flowers should be fresh on the Monday. They should easily last 2-3+ weeks... If you get flowers that go to crap within a week, bring them back and get a refund... Most florists use specific plant food that should keep the flowers good for 3-4 weeks. This does mean that you can get landed with flowers that have been in the shop for up to 3 weeks but thats very rare...

If you want good, reasonably priced flowers go to M&S...

A dozen red roses cost €48 from an interflora shop plus €7.95 delivery.
Although if the shop opens on Sundays, you might be able to ring up and collect it the day before.

    Interflora Link

They'll be properly wrapped, with the plant food sachets.
Ideally they should be buds, semi-closed.
Then they open up in water & sunlight over a few days and should last a good 10-14 days.

You can order them now for Valentines day delivery, and it seems to be the same price.

Just mentioning, that they haven't put up their prices (not sure if they do).

And no, I've nothing to do with Interflora, just wanted to let people know the real prices.

Florists make money on Valentine's Day due to the VOLUME of orders, not because THEY increase the price. The price for most flowers, but especially red roses, can often increase as much as 300% for Valentine's Day orders in the Dutch markets, so obviously florists will have to implement the same increase to avoid making a loss.

In regards to roses being dead because their petals look "wrinkly"; there are hundreds of different variety of roses, some petals have this look when freshly plucked! The best bet is to give the head a GENTLE squeeze: fresh roses should be firm.

Also, speaking of the sheer volume of varieties, some variations will be more expensive than others, and the length of the stem will also determine the price: the longer the stem, the more expensive they will be.

And finally, it doesn't matter when you order the flowers: Valentine's Day prices are set as soon as the florist knows them.

(I'm a florist, but not a proprietor, and I've worked in the industry for 9 years, in two major cities and have extensive knowledge of the Dutch markets!)

What!!! Florists hold their margins for Valentines day to the same as their year round margin?

    (Good AH thread)
