Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Leaving Cert student prize

    Not sure if this is the right forum or not but basically my siblings and I were chatting last night and decided we'd like to give something small back to our old secondary school in the form of some sort of prize for a leaving cert student every year.

    The prize would double up as a memory to our late father who also attended the school and we were thinking something modest like say 500 euros each year.

    Anybody else done anything like this or have tips? The obvious way would be for best leaving cert results but by the time these come out the students have moved on from the school. The alternative would be best results in say, maths or even to vary the subjects.

    The other alternative is to take it away from the academic record and open it up to say anybody who wishes to apply or who does a particular project on say, local history. Obviously we want to keep it simple and fall in with whatever the school wishes are.

    I hate the idea of tying it to academic results, as the reality is, statistically the highest achievers come from better-off families anyways.

    How about setting up a school library, and donating €500 of books to it each year? That way all students will benefit, not just one.

    Absolutely lovely idea..! The teachers do know the results before they are given to students though, so you could ask them to maybe give the student a certificate with the results saying they have been awarded the fund.

    However, not all students will go on to 3rd level education so maybe you should have some sort of criteria if you want the money to go towards helping them fund college whereby you'd pay it straight to the college yourselves... unless of course they can spend the money as they wish

    Probably worth speaking to the principal!

    Again, it's a lovely idea and will no doubt be graciously accepted!
