Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

EU 11

We over on http://www.irishelection.com/ have been covering the fallout of the Lisbon Treaty and seeing what has been said b various people. Janez Jansa current EU president and prime Minister of Solvenia has said that the EU lacks an identity and could do with something unifying like a soccer team. So who would be on your EU eleven.

    Mine

    Casillas Spain
Lahm (germany) Puyol (Spain) Terry(England) Evra (France)

    Fabragras (Spain) Gattaso(Italy) Gerard (England)

    Ronaldo(Portugal) Sneijder(Holland)
    Ibrahimovic(Sweden)

Does not need to be based on Euro 2008 but have to be in EU.
Also would you support an EU team. It works for the Ryder Cup.

Guess the idea would be to play in an intercontinental tournament.
For fun you can pick an African and South American 11. :)
    Also who would win.

I have just come here to say that Ibrahimovic is certainly not the best striker in the EU. Hes not even in the top 5 in my opinion!

    Casilas

    Lahm
    Ferdinand
    Canavaro
    Evra

    Xavi
    Fabregas
    Silva
    Ronaldo

    Torres
    van Nistlerooy

Also, I don't think it would work.

The ryder cup works because it is an invidual sport, put into a team environment, and it is spread over days of play. An EU team could only compete in exhibition matches which wouldn't mean anything.

It would give us a great opportunity to hammer the chinks, dont think anyone would ever tire at that

Eu v South America would be a cracking match though, and Africa would be good too

Just a minor bone of contention there. The Ryder cup is not an EU team, it is a European team. So is our football team going to be an exclusively EU one (i.e. no Russians, Serbs, Croats, norweguans etc) or a European one?

no he operates a lot better on right back, his preferred position.

why would he prefer a position if he is worse at it?

For f*ck's sake. What is it with these guys? I would never support an 'EU' team. So sick of these sly, pathetic attempts to engineer an identity that simply doesn't exist.

Lol at the people picking Gattuso. He's finished, and is crap imo. Good for a yellow card and nothing else.

    Casillas

    Richards
    Puyol
    Carvalho
    Lahm

    Fabregas

    M. Petrov
    Podolski
    Van Nistelrooy

    Casillas
    -Lahm--Ferdinand--Carvalho--Evra-
    -Ronaldo-Fabregas-?????--???????-
    Torres---Van Nist

Personally I think the rest of the team is self-evident, even though I could see some dispute over Casillas and Van Nist, but you can't deny their performances over the last two years. Casillas was Madrid's player of the season this year like!

As for center midfield, I was trying to think of some DMCs, Senna isn't really Spanish anymore than Ronaldinho is, in which case, both questions are answered.

So i'm going for Xavi, wee bit offensive but whatcha going to do :) Best DMC in the EU I'd say last year was Hargreaves.

For left wing, Robben I guess, he is just amazing, although never fit.

Argentina is hardly in the EU. I just can't believe anyone wouldn't pick Gerrard.

    > So who would be on your EU eleven.

But shouldnt it be an EU-27, with perhaps 11 on the pitch at any one time with the 16 subs rotating in and out and being guaranteed to play 10 mins out of every 15? ;-) Or just change the rules and let all 27 play?

So how about as an additional exercise listing the best player from each country out of all the EU-27, and not worry about whether they gel into a team or not:

    IE: ?
    DE: Ballack
    ES: Torres
    FR: ?
    IT: Pirlo
    NL: Van Der Sar ?
    SE: Larsson
    PT: Aveiro (legal surnames only!)
    UK:
    etc

Anyone know who is the best player from Lithuania?

Senna plays for Spain, Ronaldinho plays for Brazil. That's the key difference.

Ribery or Sneijder over Robben for me.

Their keeper plays for Dinamo Moscow (Karcemarskas) he's not bad.
Mikolunas playing for Hearts and Jankauskas for Belenenses ain't bad either.
Latvia and Estonia may be tougher.
And apart from Mifsud Malta has nowt

Is anyone else baffled by Lahms inclusion in alot of these teams, I haven't seen him play throughout the season but have seen all the games in this competition and he has gone back loads in my opinion.
He has been a bit of a weak link at the back since the start of the competition.

Having seen him in the Bundesliga a fair bit (and believe me I hate to say this, he's a judas) he is solid for his club defensively and also contributes a fair bit going forward.
    Great linking up with Podolski.

Right, on a boring train to Galway over the weekend, I thought about this.
The only way it would work would be if one player was chosen from each EU state to make a 27 man squad. I've put up a possible squad here (bearing in mind that it isn't necessarily the best player from each country)

Goalkeepers- Artur Boruc (Poland), Petr Cech (Czech Republic), Aleksandrs Kolinko (Latvia)
Defenders- Fabio Cannavaro (Italy), Carlos Puyol (Spain), Martin Stranzl (Austria), Daniel Van Buyten (Belgium), Ignas Dedura (Lithuania), Marek Cech (Slovakia), Giourkas Seitaridis (Greece), Cristian Chivu (Romania), Bostjan Cesar (Slovenia), Jeff Strasser (Luxembourg)
Midfielders- Michael Ballack (Germany), Steven Gerrard (UK), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Aiden McGeady (Republic of Ireland), Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands), Christian Wilhelmsson (Sweden), Mika Vaerynen (Finland), Zoltan Gera (Hungary)
Strikers- Karim Benzema (France), Dimitar Berbatov (Bulgaria), Ioannas Okkas (Cyprus), Michael Mifsud (Malta), Vladimir Vosbonnikov (Estonia), Martin Jorgensen (Denmark)

    Possible Starting XI
    P.Cech
    Seitaridis--Cannavaro
    Puyol
    M.Cech
    Sneijder---Gerrard
    Ballack
    Ronaldo
    Benzema
    Berbatov

So the smaller nations generally wouldn't get a look in (just like in the political EU then )

    PS-sorry about the long post!

If the UK was broken up I'd add
    David Healy from Northern Ireland
    Jason Koumas from Wales
    Craig Gordon from Scotland
and if I'm at that, why not throw in
    Alberto Lopo (Catalonia)
    Asier Del Horno (Basque Country)
    Borja (Galicia)
I may try and do a South American one now :p

And here's the product of a night of boredom
my Americas Selection to play the EU XI. Same rules apply, one player from each country to make a 27 man squad. Was originally supposed to be solely South Americans but needed 27 countries.
Goalkeepers- Tim Howard (USA), Claudio Bravo (Chile), Donovan Ricketts (Jamaica)
Defenders- Roberto Rosales (Uruguay), Martin Hidalgo (Peru), Lorgio Alvarez (Bolivia), Rafael Marquez (Mexico), Roman Torres (Panama), Gustavo Cabrera (Guatemala), Marco Velez (Puerto Rico)
Midfielders- Kaka (Brazil), Cristian Rodriguez (Uruguay), Freddy Guarín (Colombia), Antonio Valencia (Ecuador), Shawn Beveney (Guyana), Clifton Sandvliet (Suriname), Yenier Marquez (Cuba), Julian De Guzman (Canada), Paul Ifill (Barbados)
Forwards- Lionel Messi (Argentina), Roque Santa Cruz (Paraguay), Kenwyne Jones (Trinidad & Tobago), Wilber Sanchez (Nicaragua), David Suazo (Honduras),Abel Thermeus (Haiti), Gonzalo Frechilla (Dominican Republic)

    Starting XI

    Howard
    ---Rosales
    Marquez
    Hidalgo

    De Guzman

    Valencia
    Guarín
    Messi
    Suazo
