Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Australian Trained Teachers in Ireland

    Hi there.

    I'm sorry if this subject has been done before. I did some searches but couldn't come up with anything so here goes.

    What are the requirements for an Australian trained teacher to be able to register and teach early childhood and primary school in Ireland? I've been scouting around but the information has been vague and the emails from the Teaching Council equally cryptic.

    I am presently undertaking an education and disability double degree (5 years) that will qualify me as a Special Education teacher, my primary focus being Autism.

    I can sign (Auslan) and I have languages other than English but, alas, not Irish :(

    What are the considerations I should make should I move to Ireland? Would there be any opportunities for someone with my quals in the non teaching sector? I'm thinking there's probably a crapload of unemployed teachers in Ireland right now.

    First things first you need to get your degree assessed by the Irish teaching council. That includes getting your transcripts , diplomas in , filling in paperwork and giving them a lot of money. This usually takes a long time. When they've assessed this , they'll let you know what you are missing from your degree. I'd say the difficulty here is that it sounds like you've a specialised education degree in SEN . In Ireland teachers do a BEd in Primary Education which contains a lot of different subjects and modules so you'll need to compare what's in each degree. (Have a look at the module descriptor for the BEd in St Patrick's College Drumcondra to compare). Usually teachers in Ireland only specialise in Special Ed after a postgrad or Masters in the area.

    The Irish is a big problem too. You will definitely need to get lessons in Irish, sit the Irish exam, and spend time in the Gaeltacht. It's not impossible , people have done it before, it will take time though.

    Then the job search. It's not easy to get a job over here. There are many threads on here that would give you an eye opener so be careful of making such a big move. Do you mind me asking why you want to move to Ireland?
