Weird sound when turning wheel

yesterday when starting up the car and driving off, i started hearing a light thumping sound, and basically noticed it only happens when turning the steering wheel.

There's no effect to the actual steering, just a gentle deep bass thump thump thump as long as you keep turning.

Any ideas what could be causing it?

Sounds like you need to change CV joint.
It's fine when driving straight yeah?
What happens if you steer full lock the other way?

Universal joint in the steering column.

no, it's nothing like that. it's really deep and bassy (thump, thump) and not rattly like that at all. there's a sound maybe every 2 or 3 seconds, almost as if every rotation of the transmission something bumps on the metal. it's by no means loud at all.

Possibly the wheel rubbing against the arch? It's really hard without actually hearing it.

Have someone else drive slow while you walk beside and listen.
Again, go full lock both ways and report back.

A cv joint will click when moving, if it happens when your not driving, just turning then it could be a top shock mount.

Yes, I have had this symptom on two cars and it was the shock top mount both times.

I suggest that the OP looks and listens to the suspension and strut while a helper turns the steering wheel. There could be quite obvious sounds/movement coming from the area of the top mount.

Always try the simple things first. The mother had a very similar problem a while back, and topping off her power steering fluid solved it. Simply checking the level wouldn't be a bad place to start.

checked at the weekend, and the sound only appears whilst turning the wheel left, nothing when going right. no other obvious signs. very strange

It sound to me like your springs are not turning when you turn the wheels and when enough force builds they move and create a thumping noise at the same time. Top shock mounts and bearings could be the culprit.

Someone should build a website with all the noises a car can make and then the noise could be linked to posts like this to better explain the noise.

You heard it here first folks!
