Given that it's grade separated, will metro north be driverless like the DLR? It might save money and nicrease availability of the service.

    Is that total recall?

The new Copenhagen metro doesn't have drivers.

Neither does the metro in Vancouver. Originally the DART was supposed to be driverless too but the IBRU kicked up at stink about that. And thats why the metro north will have drivers too.

It won't have any affect on the availability of the service. That's because Iarnrod Eireann and the NBRU dinosaurs won't have anything to do with it. The metro will be run by a private company in the same way Veolia run the Luas. Notice how since the Luas opened there have been absolutely no strikes whatsoever nor did the Luas drivers threaten to strike when the trams were lengthened like the DART drivers did when the DARTs were lengthened.

Veolia had a "Purple Flu" after a driver was fired(?).

They nearly had but their union, which got on board before there where any employees:confused:, wouldn't and still doesn't back them. They also had to sign a no strike contract for 3 or 5 years, can't remember which, and because they can be fired they have to keep to.

I assume if MN has above-ground running near Ballymun and near Swords, it's too dangerous to have driverless operation. If it was completely underground, they might have considered it.

DLR and the copenahagen metro are mostly above ground and driverless.

No reason why driverless trams should be any less safe then ones with drivers. Put enough sensors on them and they would probably react quicker then a human.

Mind you I would draw the line at having driverless trains running at 150mph or driverless airplanes.

The entire Vancouver Skytrain system is driverless.

You need to ensure that the tracks are totally segregated and secure i.e. well fenced off.

The reality of it is that if you stand out in front of a train whether it has a driver or not you'll be squished.

Can anyone think of a reason why metro north should have drivers rather than automated operation?

    Political acceptance.

If they announced it was to be driver-less, the Daily Mail, Sinn Fein and countless other groups would be up in arms about the danger of it all. What about little Molly who wants to cross the tracks to get to school and gets hit? What if there's some end of the world disaster and all the passengers are trapped without help.

    "end of the world disaster"

well the answer to the second bit is contained in the question!! :D
