Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What will now happen to civil partnerships?

    Now that the referendum has passed, and in time the Govt will legislate to allow for same sex marriage...

    When will happen to the current concept of "Civil partnership"

    Many of those will choose who are already civil partners might choose to upgrade to marriage, but will the "civil partnership" be available for future use? and why?

    It will in all probability legislated for in the coming months. Either recognizing them as marriage or provision for an "upgrade" path.

    They should charge about €50k and get back some of the cost of the referendum.

    what made me think of this was today at work a (straight) man was joking that he could placate his girlfriend with a straight civil partnership (if it existed) as a stepping stone to marriage

    this was a well intentioned comment from a man who jokingly suffers from self diagnosed commitment issues, as many men do... i.e. they don't want the pressure to put a ring on a finger...

    will civil partnership be made available for straight couples?!

    The plan is that, once legislation enabling same-sex marriages comes into operation (likely to be around the end of this year) it will no longer be possible to celebrate civil partnerships. Existing civil partnerships will continue to be recognised, although civil partners will have the option of "upgrading" to marriage.

    Civil partnerships, basically, were introduced as a "separate but [almost] equal" device to try to head off the demand for full same-sex marriage. Obviously, that didn't work. Equally obviously, the reason for having civil partnerships no longer applies.

    Clearly didn't understand the concept of a civil partnership - just shows that they weren't 'Equal' or 'Equivalent' to marriage if your non-committal friend seen them as a joke and/or a fob off for marriage!
