Started playing Rhapsody: A musical Adventure for psx. Seems very fun so far. Extremely easy though.

On Final Fantasy VIII disc 2 at the moment. Squall is actually the complete ball bag he's been made out to be. I'm feeling a bit sympathetic for him but yeah, this is definitely the Twilight of video games.

Replaying this as well. Just on the missile base part. I remember now that I really hated Draw. Still do ;)

Wasn't it :) Although talking to my girlfriend about it I'm starting to think Earthbound was better. Mother 3 was certainly the better game but storywise I think earthbound was less obvious about it's themes and more ambiguous and fact that it took the entire game before it came together was a brave decision.

Still, both are pretty much essential to any RPG fan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,897 ✭✭✭megaten

I thought both mother 1 and Earthbound handled their endings better to be honest. Mother 3's was heart-wrenching but I was surprised that there was no clear closure like the first two games.
I do think Mother 3 is a better game overall. It's well paced and I enjoyed the greater focus on characters.

Yeah the chapter system that is also used in Dragon Quest 4 kept it really nicely paced.

I had a long hard think about the ending and came up with a conclusion to what it's all about, maybe you'll agree with me:
The whole game is about getting on with your life and not getting hung up on the past. From Flint being a bad father since he gets obsessed with looking for Claus to the people of Tazmily village stuck in their ways forever due to the past being blocked from their minds and many other characters are the same. The magypsies are the exception and accept their fate. I see the ending as Lucas getting on with his life when he pulls the needle. the world is destroyed but they aren't all dead, I think it symbolises Lucas leaving his past behind and starting anew.

Anyway, would like to hear your thoughts. I actually thought it was a very brave ending and totally unexpected. I also loved how
the masked mans identity was really obvious but this was actually a part of the writing were it was obvious to flint and lucas as well but they just wouldn't accept it, another example of the past affecting people that can't let go and get on with life.

Yeah, it can be a real put off to using magic. If I have 100 of any spell, I'm really reluctant to use it.

If you junction properly and abuse the +1 a level stat boosts that GF's give you when you you concentrate on the stat% abilities then there's absolutely no reason to use anything other than physical attacks throughout the game. It's a problem with FFVIII, it you don't understand how the game works is an absolute bore summoning GF's all the time. If you understand it it's easy to break and it becomes a total breeze.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

I remember attaching 100 drains to each characters attack and was healing myself for about 6000HP per attack, or something like that anyway. 1-hit KO's were the only real danger then. And there wasn't any regular enemy or boss capable of doing that anyway

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,825 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's not really a complaint against the game, the best thing about it is how broken the battle system is and exploring ways to exploit it.

On Disc 3 now. Feeling the effects of the
orphanage "twist". I like how the GFs almost surgically erased that specific part of each of their fluiching memories ffs!!
Whoever designed the rules of that wretched card ought to be strung up. Started off as an awesome wee distraction and now it takes me actual hours to abolish some of these moronic "rules".

That 'twist' is the most retarded piece of storytelling... well ever!

    To make it worse
Irvine knew about it all along, he was there in the orphanage but, you know, didn't bother telling anyone that the person they are trying to kill was Cids wife and looked after them all when they were younger because he didn't think it was important. What a berk.

Yeah I hated those rules too! I would usually spam the square button to speed up the card starting conversation without realising that I had agreed to annoying rules.

That said, the basic card game in FF8 was too easy and boring once you got decent cards (i.e. character cards, or GF cards). It gets to the stage where its impossible to lose. Its just a matter of "claiming" the corners with A-A or 9-9 cards.

That's why I preferred the card game in FF9. It was always a bit more random and unpredictable. But if you had decent cards and placed them well, you had a statistically greater chance to win. I've only recently discovered how the hexadecimal numbering system works and have been playing it lately on the train.

Some of those rules though wouldn't allow you to claim corners like that. I know my rules got totally ****ed up everywhere I went with Random everywhere and weird rules about how to turn cards. Meant that nearly every card battle had to be very strategic and usually ended up in a planned combo at the last minute.

Really hated the rules for getting some of the rarer cards. The one where you had to lose Ifrit was a real pain especially when I had Random cards and take a random card when you win in that area at the time. Had to keep playing until I got Ifrit in my deck and then if I did I usually ended up fluking a win in the last move by accident or he'd win and not take the right card. Then there was the pain in the ass of trying to win it back.

I missed the Missing Score in FFVII and was raging when I found out that part of Midgar was a one time only thing. I ended up using a guide (just to avoid missing out on items like this) for VIII. The plus rule is evil, just plain evil.
I reckon Squall was a good idea for a character. I was picturing a Shelldon Cooper type of lone wolf soldier with poor social skills. I'm guessing that they'll have him end up as
caring and sensitive because he gets together with Rinoa.
They just went too far with the lone wolf thing and if that is how it ends (I don't know yet) it'll be a bit hard to believe.
It's been said before and it needs saying again: Irvine is a fluiching tool.

Playing FF VIII as well, on the 3rd disc, the part where
You arrive in Esthar for the first time, and you go to the dreamworld
Hated the draw function and junctioning as well!

    Very true.

The card game was so addictive at the beginning but the spread of the rules really ruined it near the end.

I'm currently playing through VIII. There are too many ways to exploit the system for it to be fun though.

That's another feather in IX's cap; unlike VII & VIII there is only one exploit I know about (Quina's lv5 death vs Grand Dragons) that you could really consider being 'breaking' the game, and even that one is troublesome enough to be considered just good strategy.

VIII always feels like everything you do is breaking the game.

Devil Survivor is fantastic. The multiple endings/routes are all worth doing. One of the routes is impossible if you dont have the right demons, think its the cult leader girl one, which is a bit of a pox

Isn't the 3DS one just like a special edition rather than a sequel?

Yes, it's not even in 3D except for the movies. It's got an extra Day 8 scenario. It's better off to think of it like Persona 3 FES to Persona 3.

    I didn't know this! 28th Feb can't come soon enough.

Apparently it's more like Persona 3&4 in the battle system and with character relationships etc.

Unlikely. very few of the Atlus DS games came out here. Though the 3DS might be different.

since my last update Ive gone a lil mad. I finished FFVI then started the ds version of 3, I'm around 20 hours in. Then I started devil survivor, great game, on day 2 i think. Now ive just started FFII GBA version, just been arsing around in it leveling up Firion. I also have FFI, FFIV DS, FFV, FF tactics advance, FF tactics ds, 3 gba/DS fire emblem games, Valkyrie Profile and SMT strange journey all waiting in the ranks to be played. should be an interesting couple of weeks

THe DS is region free. I imported it from america...and then left it on an airplane:( Great game.

At the momoent I'm playing Etarian Oddesy (so difficult) and Valk Plume (2nd run throuhg to see the endings).

Lahinchians, I found the GBA versions of Fire Emblem and FF Tactics to be better than their DS counterparts - especially in the case of FFT, the DS one was so dissappointing.

I really hate the Tactics Advance games. They're too easy for their own good and the battles are therefore really unsatisfying. Really hate the shop interface as well.

Have parked Xenoblade Chronicles and gotten back into Persona 4 over the weekend. Forgotten how good it is. Such a great story with almost perfect dubbing. I always opt for the original Jap voices if possible but this is one game where that isn't neccessary.

    Its okay.

The graphics could have done with a bit more spit and polish for the PSP version and the camera can be awkward to negotiate.

The story is interesting so far (although it can be a little difficult to get to grips with the olde English names and clans etc).

Finished FFT years ago. One of the best games I ever played but damn hard. I heard the difficulty has been tweaked for the PSP release.

I have heard people being disappointed with that game that had played Tactics Ogre first since it's a much better game but still think it's well worth playing.

Finished Persona 4 but got one of the crap endings :( Was sure I answered all the questions correctly. Will have to back and get the proper ending.

Have moved on to Radiant Historia. Good story / characters so far. The time travel thing is nicely implemented too. Hopefully the combat develops a few more nuances.

playing chapter 3 of Orge Tactic on psp :D

you can really tell that Matsuno excels in making amazing political style story if you let him have all the power on the script writing. also it seems that when his team moved over to Square, Square's battle system designer must have helped him out abit. I keep getting a strong feeling that FFT is like a streamlined version of orge tactic (as in menu/battle system/job system being distinct and better to play with), which makes perfect sense too since FFT is matsuno's later work. but FFT story is so much fail after the first half, maybe because he was forced to throw in some 'fantasy' element.

i heard that the psp version improved/fixed alot of gameplay and i absolutely love the going back system and allowing you to save multiple quick saves (and some minor things like you are allowed to stop at any town between your destination) . There is one thing i dislike the gameplay very much is that the new recruit will be downgraded to the same job level that you currently have......and i notice that there are so many things to click in battle due to the clunky design of the battle menu. Overall i prefer FFT's battle/job system (duh, mages are useless in mid/late game but at least he can be a good healer but in Orge tactic they dont allow you to do so, i may change my mind when i get the Lord class) but orge tactic wins the story medal hands down, unless....the final boss is another flying succubus from some hentai.......

some pros and cons in both game, i'd love to see what can matsuno create if he was given another chance to do another 'tactic' game.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,825 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The only problem with the old tactics ogre was some severely bad balancing issues. Enemies levelled with the main character who always raced ahead in levels compared to the support characters making them useless unless you went into a training stage and leveled up for hours by throwing stones at each other :) The PSP version has been given a big overhaul.

As for Tactics Ogre being a great political story, well it would want to be considering it's just a retelling of the 1990's war in the Balkan region with fantasy elements :)

Getting a bit pissed off with it now.

Stuck on a particular mission and the AI just seems to be cheating.

Strength weak enemies taking just what they need off my characters with normal attacks to kill them (I have 23 HP the mage somehow takes exactly 23HP from me with his staff).

Worse than anything else though is how often cure or other support spells miss. Its like 2/3 for me in favour of misses and in a tight battle its just stupid.

Watching stupid cut scenes I can't skip everytime I have to repeat a battle isn't helping either.
