Anyone taken the plunge - Home dye?

Ok so I know there are threads on this already but they all recommended to go get hair done in the hairdressers, right now I just can't afford it.... flipping recession ruining my beautifulness!?

So I'm wondering what's the best home-dye hair colour? I went into Boots and Superdrug today and there are so many of them, I was thinking I should go with the most well known brands like Garnier and L'oreal or Nice n Easy but I just don't know.

I have been getting highlights for years, my hair is naturally blonde but can be quite a darker blonde during the winter which is why I got highlights to start with, just to give it a bit of a boost. Its a very light golden-y blonde, not platnum and I would prefer to keep it along the lines of that colour, not to go too much lighter.

Are there any home-kits that give a highlight finish, so its not an all over colour? Or should I just stick with the roots for another month or two and save??

    Any help would be great!

L'Oreal, according to my mother (who used to be a colour specialist/hairdresser) but that's in NA, no idea if there's anything better here.

I'd say it's pretty hard to make a mess with Nice and Easy.

Just a matter of finding the right shade.

Do a strand test if you're worried!!

    Thanks for the replies!

I know it sounds bad but I keep thinking Nice n Easy is for older woman but I suppose not, it would be all they same really?

bronte, when you say strand test, do you literally mean just take the one strand of hair and dye it and sees what happens? Ya I never thought of that, thanks, I think I would be too impatient though and just want it all done!!

This may sound stupid but when you use an all over colour, would it be the same colour all over or would the fact I had highlights before make the colour different (in a good way though) like I got highlights? If you understand what I'm saying?

God Forbid you'd "take the plunge!"
I'm sorry darling, but it must be said that you sound stuck up here. So many ladies, like me, dye our own hair at home because we SIMPLY CANNOT AFFORD OTHERWISE. In response to your question though, I use Schwartzkopf, and I think it's fabby. x

I'm 18 and use nice and easy so I hope it's not an old lady dye :(

Definitely +1 for it though, I use it over highlights and it looks great, verynatural and ... multi-tonal, if that's a word :pac:

I've used both l'oreal and nice and easy dyes. I would recommend them both. Just choose the shade you like and go for it. Word of warning: remove towels/matts from the bathroom before doing it! :)

I recently used the L'oreal 10 minute one and it was great, hair is in great condition and nice and shiny.

My blonde highlights still show through under Nice and Easy 'Golden Auburn'.

:rolleyes:eh no she doesnt...shes obviously just used to getting salon highlights, which is understandable as home dye jobs can go horribly wrong if you're not used to them. Highlights are difficult to get right by yourself.

Ive done a mixture and am now sticking with home dye, the result is the same if not better than a salon job. Ive dark brown hair and had highlights for awhile so the highlighted bits were lighter than the rest but still looked well.

Id deffo do a strand test though just in case. Also do a semi permanent as if you make a mistake with a permanent its harder to fix.

I use L'Oreal. I started about 8 months ago. The actual condition of my hair is fine - it's the colour that can be the problem.

The problem I have is that it's great the first time and the colour takes fine - it's the second/third times and more where it gets more complicated.

For me, bottom line is to pick a colour near as possible to what it is normally. Then I just do the roots - otherwise I end up with a horrible 2 tone effect that looks so cheap. My hairdresser has explained the science bit to me :( I now try to colour it myself twice and then go to her to fix it.

You can a cap with loads of holes in them and a brush with a hook on the end to pull the strands out. It makes highlighting soooo easy. My friend uses it all the time.

Lady Luck there is no need for what I have highlighted in bold.

Not at all! Nice and easy is for everyone!!

Yep hun, take a small (4 or 5 hairs) amount from the underneath of your hair, preferably hair that's covered by other hair if you get me!
I'm as impatient as yourself, but believe me this is well worth doing...saves you mucking up your entire head of hair if it goes arseways!
I would imagine highlights would show through an all over colour...blonde tends to be pretty strong.

Thank you all so much for your replies and advice! I didn't mean to offend anyone Lady Luck and I don't mean to come across as stuck up.... It's like anniehoo said I am used to getting my hair done in a salon because I had heard so many horror stories about home dyes that I was scared to do it at home and ya I can't afford it anymore, I have no job....

L'oreal and Nice and Esay seem to be the best too! I will try go into Boots/Superdrug again today and see which colour best matches up to my own hair colour from both those brands! I'll let you know what I choose! The only reason I thought Nice n Easy was an older dye was because I remember my nan using it but then again that's a good thing that it has been around for ages, it shows its a good brand!

And thanks bronte and anniehoo I'll do the strand test I'd prefer not to have multi coloured hair!! :D

Oh and when I was in Boots and Superdrug yesterday I THINK it was L'oreal but they had buy 2 for about a €10 (Superdrug had a better offer on though), it was definately a popular brand I just can't remember which one exactly but if anyone is planning on dying again soon it might be worth checking out!

Again didn't mean to offend anyone!
