Hi

My PS3 decided to brick itself during an update so Sony sent somebody around 2 days ago (11th Dec) to collect it. I'm wondering how long will it take before I get it back ?

    Thanks

No mine was 13 months old. Ring Sony - Look for the "Bluray of death" thread, and it gives contact numbers etc.

Thanks guys. That's not too bad then.

I rang them yesterday and they told me to return it to the store.
He said it would be chargeable if I sent it to them.

My issue is when I turn it on the fan goes really noisey for about 10 seconds and turns itself off.

The thing is it has plenty ventilation for air flow around it.

Just to answer that question, I got a PS3 back today just now. I called them a week ago (Dec 9th 2008), they sent somebody around to collect it (Dec 11th) and I got it back today (Dec 16th).

All in all good service. I even got another controller in the box!

Is it a launch model 60GB?

If yes, you might get it replaced for free if you're nice on the phone;)

My 60GB launch model bought on release day broke down out of warranty and they replaced it for free, i just had to pay postage.

Well im not entirely sure cos i got it as a present. My guess would be that it was a launch model. Its 60GB. Would the fact that it was purchased in the U.S make a difference ?

I'd say so, it makes it region 1 and can't play Europe dvd's.

So Sony can't fix it and send it out to another customer in Europe.

They probably won't want anything to do with it I'm afraid, but ring them up anyway.

Yes. You send your faulty PS3 to a depot in Dublin and they send you one back. It doesn't take long at all.

Try your best to turn it on and hit eject immediately. If doesn't work I'm afraid its stuck in it.

I found this very surprising, they didn't offer me anything like this and have mine a long time and its 60GB

My bloody 60GB unit is after dying now!!!

I rang Sony and looked into getting it repaired but they told me they don't do repairs, only replacements. Is this true?

If I send in my 60GB unit, will I get a 60GB replacement back or a newer non-PS2 compatible version back?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 zyggy32

Went to Game where I bought it... THey more or less told me to F**K off ..... Rang Sony I told them that my Ps3 was not booting up and the disc was stuck, they said it will cost 160 EUR for repairs.

Do they just replace it or repair it........It's b***lix as most TV's last 10 years or more and are cheaper than the 60 Gig... Does anyone know anything about this EU Law of warranty under 2 years?????

Same here ongarite, you'll more than likely get a 80GB version that cant run PS2 discs. Happened to me on Saturday night.

What did Sony say to you?

They replace it using the place you bought it from.

I rang Sony and they said it would be €168 for a replacement. I then mentioned to Gamestop the Eu law thing and he said you are entitled to replacement, repair or refund.

But its the person who offers this (Gamestop) has to choose whats the best course of action for the consumer and guess what they pick he €168 replacement.

I got a refurbished 60gb model, I was lucky though as there were still some in circulation when my one died.

How long has that lasted for you ..... I am a bit wary of the Refurbished ones... Could break quicker however I haven't any option lol

Or, on the flipside, the faulty component might be replaced with a superior one?

Very true, I just think that something like this should last as long as a TV for example..... Especially when they are so expensive in the first place. I bought for arounsd EUR 600 at the time,

A bit of advice I think I know how mine broke.... Typically they say a PS3 should be standing on its side. I had mine flat on its base. Decided to move it the other day to on its side whilst it was quite warm..... Reckon the solder slid then :eek::eek::eek:

The refurbished one is still going strong. I've had it longer than the original one.

did any of ye have to ring sony to confirm the adress you want your replacement delivered to? i sent mine off on wednsday

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 zyggy32

I Sent them and email listing my address they take about 2 to 3 working days after they collect your console. Got my replacement but it had problems.

THe screen was freezing and the console was taking ages to boot. I had to turn on and off a good few times. The trouble was I had redownloaded all my software and then had these issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,329 ✭✭✭wcarey1975

I was starting to get some issues like those just recently. But it started with my internet connection and started to progress. I had a 320G drive installed and removed it and re-installed the original 80G with a backup of the original which was approx 50-60G and now it's behaving itself. I had to go out and buy a 500G EXT HDD to back it up on that was the only problem. Once 'new' HD was installed PS now working like it's old self again. Just my €0.02c

    What Sony's phone number?

I need to replace my blu rey lens I think cause my games aren't recognised but my DVD's still work. So it's seems to be the blu rey only.

hi. you need new laser 400 aaa

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21 zyggy32

In my opinion you are better off now paying the extra and getting a PS3 Slim as I am just waiting for mine to Burn out again... You only get a 3 month warranty from Sony... They give you a refurbished Console and not your own one back.....

The only reason I got the refurbished one at the time is because I could not wait 2 months for the new console to be released...

Be warned I am hearing of a lot of Refurbs or 2 year old consoles burning out... Lets hoe sony got the PS3 Slim right:D

Just fixed my PS3 there on Halloween. Apparently it didn't need to be repaired at all, I just had to restore the Database. The way I did it, I turned the PS3 on from the back, then I held down the Powerbuttom until I heard 3 beeps, then it turned off and I waited 10 seconds before holding down the power bottom again until I heard the doublebeep and it asked me if i'd like to restore the database. I said yes and in a matter of minutes I was playing my PS3 again. This seems to be a regular occourence with PS3's after 2 years and apperently a lot of people who sent their PS3's to Sony to get it repaired all broke down when they got them back, so I don't know but to me Sony are real moneygrabbing b*stards for having people pay 150 euro to get their PS3's repaired, when it seems that the problem isn't replacing the laser or lens but just simply the system either needs to be cleaned or restored.

Most people did do a restore a last resort, and it still didn't bring it back. Still good to put it up here. Now I need to find out what the hell is a "power bottom". The mind is boggling.......:D

"I purchased my playstation3 about 2 years ago and have never had a problem with it until about two weeks ago when i was trying to play modern warefare 2 and the system froze while it was trying to load a level.

The system was 100% not responsive so i restarted it. Since it froze the playstation cannot read or acknowledge any disc, dvd, bluray, etc."

I don't have the receipt anymore, who's best to contact? I don't want to pay €160.

Sounds like you will need to open the console and remove the disk and card by hand,

You might have a problem if there was any damage caused by the disk and card moving and spining.

PM me if you need anymore help.

Anyone got recent experience of this? Mine packed in Christmas day, it was 40gb fat one, they charged 120€ and are sending out a 120gb slimline. The broken one was collected by dpd today. Anyone got an idea how long takes to get it back these days?
