Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Bicycle Helmet Upgrade

    Hi All

    Are bicycle helmets all the same standard or are there different standards etc. What would be the best helmet to buy? Id like something that is:
    1. best safety specification.
    2. comfortable.
    3. looks decent.

    Weight or aerodynamics don't really bother me id like safety above all.

    Weight can be a factor, an extra 100-200g on your head makes a difference IMO! Also, the degree of the cooling. Some helmets are great at this, some not. As long as it's from a reputable manufacturer, safety is going to be good anyway *e.g., Giro, Specialized.

    You should go to a shop to get some advice and also to try them on and see what is comfortable for your head type/size.

    Kask Vertigo probably the most comfortable lid I've ever owned/worn. On the other hand it's also the most expensive although I got it through the amnesty.

    The Kask mojito is another good looking lid.

    The Snell standard is more stringent that the EU standard (EN1078). Specialized are one brand that meets both, AFAIR.

    Thanks for replies..id rather ask on here and get an honest opinion. I find when you go into a shop they all happen to have the best helmets in the world and also happen just to have one on their shelf. How quickly their story changes when they sense you actually know what you are talking about. I will take advice here then go into shop and try one for size if possible. I find tried and tested replies are the best review especially when it comes to cycling..cheers all above for quick replies so far

    The specialized ones look great and spec looks decent also. They conform to CPSC, SNELL B90A, CE and AS/NZS...they have a great range also :)

    you won't go wrong with a Kask. have the 50nta which is the same as the K50.

    The testing body, I can't remember their name, did various tests on helmets at the low, middle, and high price range and safety wise there was little difference in their results.

    If you are looking to get the best helmet safety wise you should be trying to get one with MIPS technology in it, these weren't tested in the study I mentioned above. The bikestore was the only place I found in Ireland that had them when I was looking during the Summer.

    POC helmets have been mentioned to me as providing improved safety beyond EU standards - A Swedish company offering the volvo equivalent in safety factors I guess....

    Good helmets agreed :)...i prefer the specialized range, they look a bit better safety wise in my opinion
