Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was thinking of maybe doing that and going straight into year 3 of the level 8 computing course... Would it be possible to transfer into computer science & software engineering in nuim with that course after year 1 or 2? Or would the courses be too different?

you'd have to talk to staff in nuim, I doubt youd be able to transfer before actually having the two years completed as its a level 6 course, You'd really just have to ask the colleges / course directors as protocols differ from college to college depending on the course. Also side note you'd probably want pretty good results for transferring too, the college your transferring too may be less inclined to take someone on board whos barley passing if the course is already pretty full.

Yeah I'm still undecided what I should do, I'd say I'll probably end up going to ncirl and trying to get into the level 8 course from there because that seems to be my best option , and I'm not too excited about the idea of going to athlone ,

Do the level 6 and then you'll get into the level 8 after your 2 years in level 6. I'm in level 8 and really like it

Yeah I think I will probably do that, it seems like my best option :)

Just had a look at the points for this year there , 340 wow that's a big jump, thankfully I got in as a mature student, once your over 23 points don't matter a fu*k you can get into any course.

Aye I'm surprised by the massive points increase and I was expecting it to jump as last year it was 270 to allocate more places.

I wish you luck in ITT Dublin.

There's only one class this year instead of two, hence the massive points jump. 60 students or so instead of roughly 100.

    I guess that explains it.

The timetables should be available sometime this week via the student portal. You guys may not have access to your account until your registration day.

hey guys just wondering what the classes are like in the business course? Is there 1 class or 2 classes? Because Me and my friend both got into the course but Im in group 1 and she's in group 2 for registration day, does this mean were in different classes even though its the same course?

Also on our first day in will we recieve our student cards?
    thanks :)

No it's just split into two groups for registration day. You should know your class on registration day which is Thursday and Friday I think? (There was a day mistake on the letters where they got the day wrong but the dates were correct).

It was grand, bit nervous at the start about talking to people but met my best friend from primary school and a good friend from secondary school and got chating to a few people through then.

There was nothing to it really, orientation I think we'll get to know people better.

Yeah I was really nervous going in aswell because I didn't know anyone but I got talking to someone in one of the business courses and a few people from Dit strangely enough so it wasn't too bad :) yeah orientation hopefully people will mingle a bit more . I think they've put up a few details on the students union facebook page about freshers week aswell

Yea freshers ball is on the the 22nd.
I think I might go, are you ?

Orientation will be much better and you will be assigned a Peer Mentor on the day with a group of 10 people. So there is plenty of opportunities to meet new people there and when you start your lectures it will become much easier.

I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if someone may be able to clarify a few things.

I was wondering what the BSc (Honours) in Computing Part-time is like. For example is there much difference between the content in this course and the full-time course. The reason I ask is that I have seen the full-time timetable in this thread and it was 20hrs/wk whereas the weekly times for the part-time course are listed as being 16hrs/wk.

Also, I was wondering if this is a rigorous course i.e. will you be proficient in algorithms and algorithmic design. Is the math also rigorous; this being something that I am looking for in a computing course.

I was also wondering what computer lanuages they focus on in this course.

And finally, if anyone went the route of gaming and Multimedia in stage 4 how was it. Where you taught any specific games engines such as Unreal Engine or others.

No difference between the content. Part time is basically full time condensed.
Also, I was wondering if this is a rigorous course i.e. will you be proficient in algorithms and algorithmic design. Is the math also rigorous; this being something that I am looking for in a computing course.

I found the software element of the course good. Year two and three are really the ones that concentrate more on the concepts of software engineering practice and common algorithms. The math in year one is basic, but it's good in that it sets you up for better understanding programming concepts later on i.e. truth tables etc. After that there's very little in terms of math, it's a more general course not math or programming specific.
I was also wondering what computer lanuages they focus on in this course.

Mainly Java. Some others are touched on later on.
And finally, if anyone went the route of gaming and Multimedia in stage 4 how was it. Where you taught any specific games engines such as Unreal Engine or others.

For part time you'll be lucky to get gaming. It's based on how many students choose it and if there's enough to run the course. This years one only had the option of Software Development as there wasn't enough students to justify any of the other options.

How has everyone who has passed through this thread got on in their lives.

I started in 2014, and I'm finishing in May. Semester 1 of 4 year was the hardest thing I've ever done. 1st, 2nd and 3rd year were a doddle (looking back, not at the time).

I hope to get a job in a digital agency/consultancy after college. What's everyone else up to?

Still in the course. Are you part-time or full-time? Wondering if I know you :)
