Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Personal statement

    My daughters heart is set on Carlow so I'll put this here. On the form for applying she has to write a personal statement. She has it mostly fleshed out but is stumped as how to start it.

    Does she start,

    Dear sir/madam,

    To whom it may concern,

    Hi,my name is xxxxxxxx,

    Something else.

    Just to add there is no one person to address. Seems like their could be a few people assessing applications.

    Any and all help greatly appreciated.

    It depends on the format of the form, if it is just a space for statement in the middle of everything else then it should just be about herself, why she wants to come to Carlow, why she would be an asset to college etc etc.
    If she has to attach a personal statement then do it as a letter, headed - personal statement name, then dear sir/madam.

    What course does she want to do?

    Once it shows a reasonable level of politeness I think any option is fine.

    Most email correspondence is "Hi X " then query or issue to staff so I don't think anyone is particularly caught up with formalities in these things.

    I'd say more important is how she sells herself as a candidate in the body of the statement.

    Seeing as there is no specific person to address it to, putting Dear Sir/Madam would appear to be most appropriate.

    I had to write one for my own application and believe it went like this:

    Dear Sir/Madam

    My name is xxxx, and I wish to apply for a place on the xxxx degree course.

    Then continued on with why I felt this was the right course for me, and everything else required with the statement, ended with a yours sincerely, xxxx. Best of luck with her application.
