If there are only 10 PS4s no point going

  • Registered Users Posts: 789 ✭✭✭jimd2

I also still prefer buy getting albums on CD or listening to my old vinyl albums. That said, I prefer to watch films on Netflix or streamed through my android box. Maybe it is because albums have been an obsession for me over many years and I have bought many vinyl albums in second hand shops and received many CD's as presents that i never made the switch.

I do listen to a lot of radio programmes and record quite a few and get to hear newer music that way.

That said, i would agree with those suggesting that HMV will have a lot of difficulty surviving, hopefully they have negotiated v favorable rents and can manage to be flexible enough in their product offerings to keep the business viable.

To those of you dissing physical copies, try listening to a cd on a good system; then listen to the same album in mp3 format via iPod or computer on the same system. There is a significant difference. Like I posted previously I haven't invested heavily in my system to negate it's performance completely by passing mp3 files through it!

Sure, if you're only going to listen to music on your phone/iPod via headphones then you're prob ok with downloads, but there is another audio level out there, and you don't have to be an audiophile or a snob to appreciate that.......it prob helps though! ;)

That argument is invalid. I can download music off various different music suppliers online in flac format which is the highest quality available and listen to that on iTunes, winamp etc. I'm an audiophile, but think CDs are obsolete.

Does anyone know if anyone is queuing outside of the store now?

Way to miss the point. If you're listening on iTunes you're already behind.

Not really. If you get a cheap PS4, you can double your money in 24 hours by just sitting on your arse.

    FYP

queuing for a ps4 isnt sad. it's worth €400. one night outside in the cold is worth that me thinks

    It's really not.

Half thinking of queuing at 6am but good chance the ps4s will be gone by then. Might call down at 8 and hope for a blu-ray player at least.

  • Registered Users Posts: 238 ✭✭Shorty11857

Just to give people a headsup queue seems to be over 60 people so probably not worth popping around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭dmcg90

Got here at 6am and I was 31st in the queue.

Seems to be a lot of kids/couples in the queue so I still hold out hope of a PS4...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

Queue isn't too bad, got here just now, maybe 60 in queue. There may be a few already inside. The cheap PS4s are probably gone but hopefully the blu-ray players are still there and some other opening deals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭dmcg90

10 ps4 consoles in stock. 11th person asking for one.

    God damn.

PS4 sold they can't seem to sell the xbox ones though

Well suddenly my vinyl budget exploded

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

2 Xbox ones left for 400 euro. Over 100 in the queue. Says a lot for the demand for the XBox One.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

Got my blu-ray player, I was number 96, quite happy with that. Some left but not for long I'd say. A lot of people buying PS4 at full price.

Something that wasn't advertised, 50 Off 2DS consoles. But I think its still only down to 110 which is only a bit cheaper than GameStop.

Not much other than that. A lot of people hogging the vinyl section.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,189 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

I'll pop up later myself, that 2ds offer is good hope there are still some left.

Oh I would think so, hasn't been advertised much at all. Its more like 20 euro off but still good if you're in the market for one.

They're doing a competition in store for that I think.

Got a PS4 for €299 in the end. They 'found' ten more. Pure luck I was at the counter at the right time.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 165 ✭✭Doublelime

I got the last €300 euro PS4 at exactly 8:29. HMV then said to 3 of my friends that they were all "gone" and only €400 PS4s were left. In the ad they said PS4s were €300 while stocks last. So doesn't that mean all PS4s should be €300?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,189 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Anyone else get told gift cards can not be used

Crap probably should have gone to the game section oh well not like there's any games I really wanted to play.

Spent the money on vinyl anyway

Ah jeez, I asked as well. Told they were gone. I got in the door at 8, might have got one if I queued.

Glad you got yours DMG, you deserved the luck.

    Cheers! Was honestly surprised.

I feel bad for the people that left the queue after they were told they couldn't get a PS4 and then another 10 mysteriously turn up.

Went to the till with over a hundred euro worth of stuff to buy after spending the guts of an hour browsing vinyl, cd and blu ready/DVD section only to find the gift card weren't being accepted. Just left there now with €150 of unused gift cards in my arse pocket because they couldn't fix their tills. So annoying....you'd think they could sort basic stuff like that out today of all days?

Selection wise, the vinyl section was good though I hope it's that full constantly and not just for today. Blu Ray was meh and only browsed some specialist DVD but they were ok.

Pricing wise, some good and in line or even slightly cheaper than online, some way out of kilter......Gama Of thrones 1-3 blu Ray €89.99, approx €67 via amazon etc. Have it so wasn't looking per se but it did jump out at me.

No blu Ray audio section which I did think they might try and tap into, but seems not.

Are those giftcards ones from recently, or from just before they originally shut their doors?
It's a different company running the show now, so they don't have to take the old ones.

New/recent - didn't think I'd have to explain that one!! They didn't have their tills set up to scan them today. Daft.

Plus, iirc, the new company promised to honour old ones anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,189 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

If you ask me that was a stunt with the no gift cards, today was all about getting in as much cash as possible, absolute shambles that the store has internally been active for the best part of a week and upon opening customers with gift cards are again screwed over. Very bad business practise.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

yeah, that's pretty crappy alright, you'd think they'd have covered all their bases before re-opening.
it's not like the infrastructure isnt there with the Xtravisions and the Henry Street, Dundrum, etc stores back up and running.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,431 ✭✭✭Hugh Cream

Thats just not true. And im so emphatic about it heres a price check for ya on the last few items i bought in HMV.

    HMV

    Best of Keane €10.99
    Villagers €10.99
    Girl €12.99
    Now 86 €19.99
    Fleetwood Mac €8.00
    We need Medicine €9.99

    Amazon

    Best of Keane €12.15
    Villagers €13.34
    Girl €12.15
Now 86 €14.94 (Bought on Amazon)
    Fleetwood Mac €9.72
    We need Medicine €9.72

So my HMV total is €52.87 and my Amazon total is €57.08 (Excluding Shipping which was mandatory on some items
as they didn't qualify for free delivery. A few years ago they would have been worlds apart but not anymore!

Photo so you know i'm not bull****ting

    303753.JPG

I also priced a PS3 game in one of the new Xtravision/HMW stores, which traditionally used to be very expensive
as Xtravision only. The game was €4 cheaper in the store than it was on Amazon.

I know that golden discs and Tower exist however i prefer using a HMV store as just browsing around they have
a huge selection and your likely to hit on something you like. There is no other store in Dublin you can do that
with the same impact. I've walked into Tower on one or two occasions way back looking for 24 boxsets and they
were a ridiculous €64.99 when they were €29.99 in HMV.
tbf tower are worse than hmv for prices, youd be crazy to buy anything off them.
wouldnt for a minute think you were bull ****ting, but personally i wouldnt bother with hmv, if i could find a smaller cheaper or similarly priced shop to what id find online id shop there.
dont feel like i need to pay over the odds for items, from people who unless its on the computer in front of them in many cases have no clue about release dates and such.

for what its worth i done a few searches on amazon and found a few of those items cheaper than what you did.

Ever since I found out about Plex I have no need for Any dvds or blu rays. It costs about €20 in total to get a box to run Plex and assuming you have a laptop or android phone or Xbox or whatever, your all set. Its possibly the easiest and cheapest way to view films and the user interface is amazing for an open source program. Not to mention that bluerays are damn expensive to buy.

Obviously a ten euro blue rah player is a bargain for non techie folk but if you have any tech experience then you probably already know about and are running Plex on some device.

    Ok......

Well what if you want to watch something in 9.2, 7.1 or 5.1 surround sound?

    What if you want HD?

What if you don't want to be waiting for something to buffer?

What if you have a top notch tv and don't want to watch stuff in your laptop?

What if you already have an extensive DVD and BR collection and want to watch those?

Plex can play files in true surround sound. Plex can play 1080p files. You hook up your Plex box to the TV via hdmi like a blue ray player. There's in no buffering if its on a home network. I have an big enough collection of DVDs but am in the process of shifting them to the parents gaff. No need for them anymore.

I had a look and plex seems better setup for pirates than consumers tbh?

I've no respect for people who would buy media until stealing becomes an option.

I pay for digital media, but physical protects the consumer as well as the artist. Cloud media can disappear at the flick of a switch and sharing apps screw artists over.

So don't slag Blu ray buyers please. We pay for the content pirates leech.

The days of hoarding physical copies, weather it be CD, DVD or Blu Ray are gone.
Streaming is the way ahead, weather it be on plex or through apple.

But hey if you want to support little old hmv, the shop that ripped us off for years, and continue to do so, who am I to argue.

It's not the same company, Hilco bought out both Xtravision and HMV last year and have redone them both as a hybrid store, this is not the old HMV and if I have to say that again I will appear out of your home screen and Grimm Reaper you, whom ever you may be.
