Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Chimney Damper or Cowl?

Hope this is the right forum, if not please feel free to move, Mods.
Last weekend decided to light the fire for the 1st time; gas bills increasing all the time.
Took ages to light and heat up, coal and wood seemed to last no time at all on it. Same again today.
Seems like there is a huge pull up the chimney, big updraught.
Looked up the chimney and there is no damper at all.
    Couple of questions:
    1. Should there be a damper; house only 20 years old?
    2. Would a damper or cowl be better at preventing the updraught?
    3. Do I need to fit both?
    4. Are they easily fitted; DIY?
    5. Any other solutions?

Never. Never restrict chimney. Your problem might be the room to drafty.

Yes & yes but always follow manufacturer's installation instructions. If unsure, ask a professional.

Just read up a bit on them on net. They all seem to mention stopping down draughts but nothing about reducing updraughts.
    Do they stop them too?

Yes but other factors can also play a role, such as outdoor conditions, flue, vents, etc.
You might be better to contact somebody like Oriel Flues & ask for a certified installer for your area. That way an on-site visit would determine the issue.

Also look at other property in your area. What do they have on their terminals? Is there a climatic condition affecting other properties or is your issue isolated?
