Do you think the P.D.F. will ever let n.c.o's do no.1 in E.O.D. ie. suit up and do the job. Standard in many other armies as far as I know.

Maybe if they have the endineering degree that most officers in EOD have.

I'm not too sure. Someone who knows better will probably post a better answer than me.

My uncle used to be a soldier and he was involved in EOD. I was always told by my ol man that his brother was always known to be very good at it. But thats 1980's early 90's-ish. So things could be different now. Plus I don't know if he was the no.1 guy, I think he had something to do with the HOBO robots.

An n.c.o. no matter how much education they have will still not be eligible.
Short sighted in my opinion but there you go.

The PDF can be picky on who is placed into such a role due to the low level of call outs (in comparison to other armies). If were a case such as the BAF / USAF who are dealing with thousands of call outs then obviously there's a need for non-commissioned ranks to be heavily involved in EOD.

    CountyNumber of Callouts:

    Carlow2 Cavan1 Clare4 Cork10 Donegal4 Dublin127 Galway4 Kerry1 Kildare9 Kilkenny3 Laois0 Leitrim1 Limerick8 Longford3 Louth7 Mayo1
    Meath10 Monaghan1 Offaly0 Roscommon0 Sligo0 Tipperary4 Waterford6 Westmeath5 Wexford3 Wicklow10 Total224

Up to November 2011there 224 call outs in the Republic (http://debates.oireachtas.ie/dail/2011/11/29/00334.asp). When compared to the number of E.O.D. Officers on the panels that is quite a lot. With that reasoning when larger armies are on peacetime role they wouldn't bother to train up N.C.O.s to e.o.d. but they willingly do.

Being picky would infer that even whilst being "picky" they the powers that be would sometimes choose an N.C.O. but alas not so. N.C.O.'s are not allowed to be even trained for the no.1 role. I think being picky without any reason of merit would basically be a blanket ban on serving troops who do not have a commission (which is the case) but may well be better qualified before selection ie. better 3rd level degrees of far higher aptitude for the role in the first place.

For an NCO having to get an engineering degree to have any this seems mad to me. It would be much more efficient to train directly bypassing the excessive theory and other 1st/2nd year general engineering fluff (most/many Eng degree courses don't specialise for at least the first year). The US Army has no problem with that approach. Coincidently to this thread, I bumped into a former US IED engineer sergeant on Monday who certainly didn't have any degree.
