Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Passat Query

Hi, I have a 2.0 TDI Passat (2012) and I have noticed it has developed an intermittent ‘clicking’ noise when the engine is running in neutral with the clutch out. The noise disappears when you clutch in, and I have tried to listen to see if it happens when the car is going but with road noise etc its impossible. I hope I’m not too vague, but there is no noise with clutch in, and its only there when clutch is out. That’s the only way I can narrow it down.

It does not happen all the time, sometime from cold, and sometimes when warmed up. Any ideas? Would it be a thrust/pressure bearing in the clutch? Car has 85,000 miles. Fully serviced at correct intervals since new.

I am based in Cork and the next step may be to look for a good indy VW specialists. Was thinking Brian Powell, or any other recommendations?

What I have seen with a few of these is that a piece of metal breaks out of the clutch pressure plate and the noise you are hearing is the metal rubbing off the gearbox casing.

If you don't get it sorted it will wear through the gearbox casing and then you are into major expense.

So if I were you I'd get it fixed ASAP.

Just having done a bit of research on this, would it be the DMF? I saw a previous poster saying that their car had what sounded like a pebble in the engine- same sound as that and they ended up changing the flywheel and clutch.

It could be the DMF also yes. If it was the DMF then there wouldn't be the same urgency in doing the job.

Either way at 85k miles the DMF probably isn't great so it's probably best to change both regardless when the gearbox is out.
