Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not paid on time

    Hiya.

For the second week in a row, I haven't been paid on Friday, as I'm supposed to be.

This week and last, direct debits have failed, incurring charges.

Am I within my rights to request that the job covers the late payment fees, since they won't pay us on time? My contract states payment on a Friday.

Are the payments coming through on a Saturday?

They came through on Monday and they say they don't know when it will come through this week.

My partner had the same problem in his last job, three times it happened and it turned out the staff member doing the wages was "forgetting" to lodge them before the deadline. Once it went through on the Saturday but twice we had to wait until Monday. Boss insisted it was a bank issue despite the admin lady claiming fault and we weren't able to do anything. So we simply cancelled all direct debits and started paying it ourselves online.

I queried it and was told we will be getting paid on a Monday from now on, and to rearrange my DDs.

Doesn't help me pay off the late payment fees this week, and my contract states Friday is the day we get paid.

I would not be impressed f I were you OP. That's a very, very poor way of running a business and treating people.

Did you at least get an explanation and an apology or is this one of those "You need the job more than I need you" type of things?

EDIT: I see your answer there. I was too slow.

    Huh... 'scuse me?

EDIT - That's cheeky, but I suppose it might be easier to just work with that from now on if you're ok with it .

I haven't replied to their message yet. Trying to word a reply in a way that isn't rude enough to get me sacked :o

I would ask to be reimbursed if I were you.

Is the late payments anything to do with SEPA do you think?

I don't know, but I don't think so. They only run payroll on a Thursday evening.

Same day as my partner then. Turned out that they found out if it wasn't in by lunch time on a Thursday, they couldn't guarantee it would be in on Friday.
Make sure your monday payment reflects the extra days in the working week!

Just imagine every Friday they paid you by posting a cheque to you.
They'll say they paid you, you'll say you don't have your money.
Same thing can happened with electronic payments.

Seems a bit childish to expect your employer to cover your bank fees.

Not being funny, but the best option is to leave a bit more cash in your current account to actually cover your bills
The second best option is to phone your utility companies and request they hit your account on a certain day of the month.
And finally see if your bank offers an overdraft facility (I have a free overdraft, but some banks charge a set up fee and/or annual fee of about €25).

When they don't run payroll on time, that's not an issue with electronic transfer.

If they paid me by cheque, I'd know my payment dates and wouldn't have this issue.

I earn circa 220 euro per week. Putting money aside simply isn't possible because I cannot afford to. I deliberately set my DD dates to match my pay days.

I appreciate the advice, though not what I asked for.

I think they might have cash flow problems. Also the chq or cash lodge machines are nightmarae. For whatever reason a lot of customers pay at the end of the week. With the lodgement machines lodgements usually don't show up on the account till 6 o'clock (I know ideally you should wait for chqs to clear) so they could have lack of funds on Fridays before 6pm and can't do the transfers. I would suspect that their cash flow is on the edge.

It might be worth talking to them and figuring out if Monday or Tuesday would not be better day to set up the dd's on. If the other employees are ok with it I doubt they will go back to Fridays. Btw if they paid you by chq it would take 3-5 days to clear (if you lodge into the bank) and you couldn't access those funds in meantime.

To guarantee payment on a Friday, they have to have to file to the bank at the latest 2pm Thursday. SEPA wouldn't cause this issue, it's purely a payroll error and really isn't on.
