Dutch Governmet is to tax cars by their movements.

Dutch drivers are to pay less to buy a car but will be charged tax on every kilometre on the road in a move aimed at reducing traffic jams, fatal accidents and carbon emissions.

GPS will track the time, hour and place each car moves and send the data to a billing agency.

I don't know if such a system would work in this country, Everyone would be wrapping their GPS sensor up in lead to avoid paying the tax.

Excellent Idea!!, I drive mine very little so would save me a lot on Road tax!

It is a massive infringement on civil liberties!
You don't think that kind of data on peoples movements would be worth a lot to someone?

Next comes the autofines in the post because you strayed over the limit.

Then even more detailed taxation because now we know where you are we can charge you for parking automatically, and fine you for the same, conjestion charges become a doddle to impose and what about the guy who works out of a van for a living?
Are all his customers going to pay more to cover the extra cost to him?

Bollox to this state getting that kind of control.

There is a very simple way to tax people on car movements and also encourages smaller more fuel efficient cars and does not unduly discriminate against people who do not drive too often.

It is called a tax on fuel,

It has the added benefit of being easy to administer and isn't a technological quagmire that will cost millions in "consultants" and "agencies".

They've been talking about this for about 20 years now. The plan is now to be implented by 2012 but the current government is only in place till 2011. The skeptic in me says it won't happen this time either. Any form of taxation like this which is prone to errors and needs a huge administrative system in place is wrong imho. Just tax the bloody fuel!!!

While a fuel tax seems like a great idea to me, look at it from the governments point of view, you could have:

An all inclusive fuel tax

OR

An importy tax on all vehicles (Vrt)
A sales tax on all vehicles (vat)
A vehicle ownership tax(motor tax)
An insurance levy
A road usage tax (tolls)
A possible movement based tax (gps)
AND
Fuel tax

I think I know which option our government is likely to go for

You can choose to take public transport, but there again, this will also have your movements tracked by registered smart card. Even the push bikes hired out by JC Decaux can be tracked to who uses them. If you walk the CCTV will track you. There will be no escape. :eek:

Yep within a few years of this going ahead cheaper insurance if your insurer can see all data, automatic speeding fines etc

Kind of like what happened with cctv in England a few years ago a law was passed inorder to help prosecute vandals and the such, now used to fine people for parking on double yellow lines etc.

The worst thing about thinking they are out to get ya is looking around and seeing the whites of their eyes!;)

This country cannot even link revenue and social welfare systems, We have at least 5 seperate HSE systems. Does anyone really think they can implement this idea?

Fuel tax is fairer and does away with any logistic mess. ( as said by above posters)

Come back to me with your high faluten gps tracker systems when tax insurance and nct/doe are linked together and on-line.
See you in 2020 or so....

So if the companies lose a fortune on their investments of our premiums we won't have to pay more to restore profitability?

If this means I'm not going to nearly miss a Channel Tunnel because of a half hour jam on the Ring Utrecht, I'm all for it... because its not like they're going to whap a tracker on an Irish registered car when you come across the border!

My guess is that these tracking devices will be your future European tax disk. They creep into the country under the guise of some state toll plaza or congestion charge electronic device. It will eventually become mandatory an inter-operable throughout the EU so if you scr*ew up in Utrecht you will automatically get a summons in Dublin..

We'll be tracked and fined for everything now from the EU thanks to our yes vote for Lisbon.
