Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Bumble-bee woman in shock birth

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/tyne/7445055.stm

A Tyneside woman who gave birth during a friend's hen night in Blackpool said she did not know she was pregnant.
Ally Ashwell, from Newcastle, was touring the seaside town's pubs and clubs in a bumble-bee outfit, when she began to feel unwell.
She returned to her hotel room, where the shocked 30-year-old found herself delivering her own baby.
The fragile 2lb boy - named Owen - is being cared for in the intensive care unit of Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
A shortage of available special care baby beds in Newcastle has meant Ms Ashwell remaining in Lancashire for three weeks since the birth.
It is hoped she will be able to travel to Tyneside soon.
    'Little fighter'
A spokesman for the Blackpool Victoria Hospital said: "It is very unusual for a baby to be born in this situation, I think Owen has surprised us all by the progress he has made.
"At 26 weeks, the chance for survival is probably about 50 to 60 per cent and the fact he was born outside hospital will have reduced that survival rate.
"So it's a tribute to the paramedics for their work and to him for being a little fighter."
A spokesman for Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary added: "We would always make it a priority to repatriate local babies who are unexpectedly born elsewhere.
"However we are the largest neonatal intensive care unit in the region and have to give priority to emergencies and to babies who are very sick and in need of specialist care that only we can provide. "We sympathise with the family for this unfortunate delay and as soon as a bed becomes available this baby will be first priority."
I've heard of this happening before, a woman giving birth without knowing she's pregnant, but how could she not know?!

True, I would understand if she was very overweight and in her 40's or 50's.
She might just presume she reached her menopause.

But the women was 30, fookin hell like,

It happened in Eastenders to the one who looked like Shrek. It also happens regularly in those real-life story magazines.

Everyone reacts to hormones differently, at different times.

She might not have regular periods or any at all, or indeed she may have had periods all through her pregnancy.

Indeed, I have heard of women continuing to have their periods in spite of being pregnant.
The thing I find concerning is when you take the combination of her not knowing she was pregnant in combination with the baby's rather low birth weight, we can assume since she was out on a hen night she was probably drinking on the night, if not throughout the pregnancy, what else was she dumping into her body while pregnant and how has it affected the baby.

True. Babies have a low survival rate when born that pre maturely, but i'd imagine that is decreased further by the drinking etc. that you mentioned. What view will child services take on this i wonder...?

Can they actually blame her though since she says she did not know she was pregnant?

Probably not... she should be smacked with the stupid stick though. It would make for an interesting call home. "Howaya Ma, guess what...."

Actually this happened to my friends long term girlfriend a few years ago when I lived in Australia.
The reason she didn't think she was pregnant was because she had been told she could never have children. They went to Sydney for the long weekend and she gave birth on the Saturday night after thinking she had been food poisoned :D

Funny thing is they had been having unprotected sex for years ..She was obviously shocked but over the moon as it was a little miracle.
Can't say the same for him though lol.

This happened to my brothers girlfriend 2 years ago. She is a fairly large girl and for about a month she was complaining of various ailments and was off work sick for about 2 weeks. One day she was at home when she got (in her words) an unmerciful pain and rang her friend who called an ambulance and they brought her to hospital where upon she was told that she was going to have a baby. She was hysterical with shock. My brother was in a training course and when he came out of it he noticed that he had a million text/voice messages on the phone. By the time he got to the hospital the baby had been born.

Yeah, it can happen to very large women. What's an extra 7lbs when you're already 10 stone overweight?

Some women can also go into denial about the whole thing, and despite growing a small bump and missing periods, they do a psychological equivalent of putting their fingers in their ears and get a "shock" when they go into labour.

Wasn't there a story like this before where a Japanese (?) woman gave birth on the toilet on a train. The newborn fell on to the tracks I believe?

On the child's birthcert: "Place of Birth: Beehive"

VERY large women generally have trouble conceiving.

It can also happen to very skinny women - some women just don't 'show'. I've read a story about a size 8 model who was 6 months pregnant and didn't know about it.

How did she get laid? I'm thinking drugs and a lot of booze, and maybe a weirdo. 2lbs too...

The baby was only 2lbs, plus the fluid etc. she would have put on less then a stone, considering this and the fact for all we know her periods may have continued, I don't see how she could be to blame.
It happened to a friend of mine, periods continued, she only put on a stone, the only reason she found out, was the fact she was actively trying for a baby and had regular check ups.

Sometimes the doctor even misses a pregnancy. A girl I work with was getting sick pretty much constantly for 3 months. Her periods continued but her stomach was sick and very sore. She went back to the doctor over and over again and after 3 months he copped that she was pregnant.

it sure is. but by my standards most babies are small, I was 11lbs when I was born. My poor mother, they wouldn't let her have a C-section back in those days, t'was all natural

It happened a girl I knew. Her periods were very irregular anyway so she thought nothing of it and had little or no visible weight gain. Seriously freaky as she'd be out partying like a good thing and never knew at all. Mother and baby were fine and the Dad eventually came around to the idea too. Think I'd need the nine months to prepare for it mentally!
