Bichon with Cherry Eye

    Hi everyone

    This site seems to be my 'right hand man' for info and advice on my new pets.
    I have a new bichon - 8month old - and he has developed 'cherry eye' in his left eye. It is where the tear gland becomes red and inflammed and an operation is required to rectify it.
    The trouble i am having at the moment is that I have been told to take him to Drogheda where he can have it done by a specialist. Since i have pet insurance on him I may aswell take him to the best of the best? I have Googled and Googled certain phrases like 'dog specialist drogheda' and 'dog cherry eye ireland' and I have gotten no links that are helpful.

    Has anyone ever heard of a dog specialist in Dublin or Drogheda?
    I am living in Offaly and willing to travel as long as I can be sure he will be treated.
    Any replies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Plenty of experience with Third Eyelid Eversion here and I can give you 2 names for brilliant ophtalmic vets, one in Co. Galway and one in Mullingar. The vet in Mullingar did a TEE OP on one of my rescues (Neo Mastiff) and I was VERY pleased!! Many vets say they can do it but I would be extremely cautious since your dog may end up with a condition called Keratoconjunctivitis sicca ,commonly known as "Dry Eye". PM me if you want the numbers for the specialists.

    I would reccommmend going to allpets veterinary hospital in Drogheda, both vets there have specialised in small animals and they can refer you onto an opthalmic vet in UCD if needs be.

    Your own vet can refer him on - you don't need to take him to a different vet just for a referral. Your own vet should have a list of the various specialists and could refer you to the vet college also.
