Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Cat 5 cable is working but it wont connect me to the switch and not lights come on when you plug in cat 5 cable! whats the story is it something that i have to configure on the laptop before it will reconize it? thought just pluggin it in would work and connect straight away! any suggestions?

If it is a managed switch is it possible the port you are connecting to is disabled to prevent access.

Make sure the network card is enabled in windows and in the bios (it will not be listed in the device manager or network connections if it is disabled in the bios)

make sure your using a straight through cat 5 cable and not a crossover cable (hold the two ends of the cable beside each other and make sure the 8 colored wires are in the same order in each connector

    Hope this helps,

    Esskay

    Cisco switch?

You can use the "switchport mode access" command to explicitly set the port as an access port.

You need to use a straight through cable.

Is the computer getting an IP address?

the nic is working because Im currently connected to the internet via wireless, but I would like to connect to the internet via the switch so I can access the servers as well as the internet. its a straight through cat 5 cable alright.

the nic and wireless cards are completely separate. Just because one is working doesn't mean the other is.

Are you really allowed "access servers and stuff"?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 October_Phoenix

Yeah im allowed access alright! Just trying to help set up a small bussiness here for a friend, but need to get access from my laptop to the switch and it just doesnt seem to want to communicate each other for some reason, no lights appear on the switch when I connect my cat 5 from the laptop over to the switch! just kinda stuck at the moment! its doing me head in to be honest. if you could really dumb it down for me that would be great

Disable the wireless and establish if you are getting an IP (assuming there is a DHCP Server/router attached to the switch).

Have you tried to manually set the IP address?

You still haven't answered questions that people asked.

If the WAP is on the same network why cant you use that to get access to servers?
Are you sure you should be doing this?

Open a command prompt in Windows and ping 127.0.0.1 and see if you get a reponse. Also post the output from "IPCONFIG /ALL"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 October_Phoenix

No im not sure I should be doing this to be honest with you! LOL but dont worry I can really mess anything up yet! Yeah I pinged the loopback address and got a response alright but thats only because Im currently connected to the wireless network. dhcp is enabled and so is netbios over tcpip. see the router is connected into the switch too and I firgured if I just plug in my cat 5 from my laptop into the switch i should just be able to get online straight away. Right? this is a brand new laptop so unless something isnt configuerd right on it to begin with Im not quite sure why it wont work! I know im only a newbie learning this kind of stuff so I appreciate all the patience you all have very much!

    C:\>ping 127.0.0.1

You're pinging yourself - theres no need to do this unless you doubt that TCP/IP stack is installed incorrectly (or not at all)... this is not the case.

What kind of switch is it? Make and model?

To me it looks like the servers are just in a different subnet/vlan/network (depending on the setup) and your doing something that you are not suppose to be doing.

That's your NIC. It's saying media disconnected so either the cable is faulty or the port is disabled on the switch.

    Its a Linksys srw2048

If the wireless access is on the same network as the servers (assuming in the same vlan) you should be able to connect to the servers.

Whats the IP address of the server you want to connect to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭toe_knee

When you plug the laptop into the switch does a light come on on your network card or your switch. If not chances are that the port you plugged into is disabled on the switch. Try a different port. By the sounds of things you dont have access to the switch configuration so I would also recommend you speak to the IT crowd who put it in and get them to enable the port
