    hi all
    looking for advice on timber for window shudders alot of plans say to use western red ceder would like to know if i could use red deal instead they will be inside and painted would red deal be good enough for shutters

    cedar would be for external use

    if its inside the house they should be ok

    one thing to consider alot of radiators are under windows if this is the case the red deal might be a bit unstable as you would have intense heat from rad and cold from window when no heating is on

    other pine you could use is southern yellow not as many knots and it has a nicer figure when finished and its easery to cover with paint

    Western red cedar is a great timber to work with, very light and virtually no shrinkage and twist but very expensive. You can use red deal but as the other poster mentioned you could have problems as soon as six months with shrinkage and warping.
    Saying that nothing is guaranteed with timber products, you could have many years with no problems at all if the timber is treated properly. I personally would use poplar or red deal because of the price.
    Best of luck with the shutters they can look great around a window.
