repainting body panels?

    hi all,

    I’m just thinking of upgrading a few cosmetic bits for my car off a higher spec model in the breakers yard.

    However, looking to save a few quid on getting the parts painted, what would be the best way to prep them?

    How far back would they need to be sanded before going to the painters?

    Any products that you’d recommend for what I’m planning?

    Also what grit wet/dry should I use for the best results?

    Bearing in mind this is my first attempt at body work and the parts are being painted black to match the car.

    Are you going to spray them yourself or get a body shop to do them?

    Oh they'll definately be going to the body shop for paint.
    I wouldn't chance doing that myself just yet.

    try youtube... found some great stuff on there when I was learning how to mop a car.

    Oh they'll definately be going to the body shop for paint.
    I wouldn't chance doing that myself just yet.

    Let the body shop sand them back. What parts are you changing?

    Boot lid with a spoiler and front lip kit.
    The existing boot doesn't have a spoiler, and i don't want to drill it, so the easiest thing seems to be just swap them.

    I'm also looking at the side skirts depending on what salvageable

    Drilling would be cheaper than painting.

    Is it bolted or bonded on...?

    the workshop manual says some sort of double sided adhesive tape and there's two bolts on each side.

    the spoiler will still need painting though.

    If you could get off the old spoiler without damage you could affix it to your boot lid without drilling unless its very big?

    Might be tricky getting it off, although after 9 years could get lucky :pac:

    its an OEM S40 spoiler just like this.

    I always thought the silhouette of the car was a bit off at the rear
