Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Recover HDD?

    Hi,
I was attempting to install Ubuntu on my netbook (so I don't have a CD drive) and the process didn't go exactly according to plan.

Basically, towards the end it told me that there was no operating system installed on the computer. I paniced at this point because I have some very important files on the XP desktop and I exited the install program for Ubuntu and then restarted the computer.

But now nothing will start. The computer starts up like it always did but it doesn't go to the XP startup screen or to the dualboot option that was suddenly there before the complete installation of Ubuntu.
All that happens is that there is a flashing white line at the top left of the screen and then nothing else.

Is there anything I can do to get Windows back?

    Any help appreciated.

Boot windows from the windows cd and choose recovery console.
And issue the fixmbr command, should be fine then.

    I don't have a CD drive. *Sorry:o

It's a netbook. (Acer Aspire One if that makes a difference).

If your comfortable doing it. Take out the sata hard drive from your laptop and put it into another computer. Make sure it is the only hard drive connected and follow the above and it should be fine.

P.s. - Don't break any seals as you will void your warranty.

    Thanks.

I tried that but due to an unmoveable screw (belonging to the wireless card above the hard disk), the hard disk won't come out.

I managed to get Ubuntu onto a USB disk. I've now installed it and I hope to use the windows disk I have and the external CD drive belonging to a friend to install windows XP later.
