Books on analyses of European fairy tales

    Hi,

    I'm looking for a nice book that delves into the morality, symbolism and variations of tales found across Europe. Any recommendations? Ideally, not too academic as I prefer easy reads.

    You could look into a few books by the American academic Maria Tatar. She has a recent title, "Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood". She's also edited an annotated Brothers Grimm and an annotated Hans Christian Andersen. Enjoyable reading isn't exactly what comes to mind, but she is comprehensive.

    Jack Zipes does similar work, and so does Marina Warner, who is more readable, if eclectic. Zipes has edited many anthologies, and his introductions are often comparative.

    There's also the older pscyhological "Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales" by Bruno Bettelheim; but interest in his arguments would depend on your patience for Freudianism.
