Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Why does Dublin even need a metro from the city to the airport?

Dublin city is one of the least congested in europe, I know it does not feel like it, but its down 9% and the only one in europe falling.

We have the airbus, throw your hand in the air you have a taxi, you can get a normal dublin bus..

We want to spend an estimated 2.5 billion, which like everything in Ireland will come in at 2 - 3 times the estimate, just like the luas did, take customers away from airbus, dublin bus, and taxis, for what?

So people can get to the airport? for how much? only costs between 4 - 8 euro now, if youre on your own get the airbus, if youre in a group get a taxi, 5 or 6 euro each, on your own, hop on the airbus, trying to save money, leave a bit early and hop on cie bus.

Dublin doesn't need a rail link to the airport if the airport and city centre are the only stops. But it's not JUST about the airport, it's about serving the communities, businesses and services all the way along the line. If it goes ahead, Metro North will interchange with LUAS Green, LUAS Red, city centre, Maynooth rail services, hospitals, colleges and more besides. If DART Underground gets the go ahead as well, even more possibilities are opened up for MN.

So, can we please stop describing Metro north as an airport link. By that reasoning, DART is nothing more than a Bray/Malahide link which is as far from reality as you can get.
Or just save the money, or spend it on crumlins children hospital, Irish kids depend on charity for treatment for gods sake.

One of the Metro stops will be the site of the National Paediatric Hospital. I don't expect seriously sick children to use it, but it will make it easier for nurses and doctors (and all the other hospital workers) to get to work, as well as visitors.

And also non-seriously sick children, children's parents and visitors.

Better that than placing a huge burden on the tax payer when we are the lowest rated country in europe.

Spend the money on roads, on speed bumps that are falling apart, the dart, cie, etc etc etc etc.. Or just save the money, or spend it on crumlins children hospital, Irish kids depend on charity for treatment for gods sake.
So you're actually cheering on Ireland's economic decline? and the hypothetical reduction of traffic congestion as a result, which would make it easier to get to/from the Airport by road?!? With that thinking, better hope that there will be an airport to get to, eventually.

Which doesn't exist, and is unlikely too.

The Mater is already served by Drumcondra Station. Electrify that line and it means it's on the DART.

Actually, while the location is disputed by some, there's little or nobody saying it's not needed. Massive upgrades of older hospitals are otherwise needed. It maybe delayed a bit like other projects, but cancelled outright is unlikely at this stage.

Dublin was served by one motorway first, for a not so strange reason, others were built.

Transport routes going in different directions and with different levels of service are not directly comparable.

The "lowest rated country in Europe" remark. Mentioning that in the context of Dublin's traffic congestion supposedly declining(?) implies that it's just fine that people are finding it less affordable to drive, and that continued expenditure on rail infrastructure will also suddenly become unnecessary due to a recession-driven depletion of road traffic (the comments about it becoming easier to drive to the airport).

AngryLips - if you're really revelling in the economic downfall of the country, please let us know in plain language.

Otherwise, can we take it that AngryLips wasn't revelling in the economic downfall of the country and concentrate on the content of his post?

This conversation will become circular and personal, and isn't constructive.

Wow, where is this coming from? I haven't made any contributions to that effect.

I took that to mean sovereign debt rating.

I find it curious that AngryLips took exception to CIE's reply to prodigal_son's post... which was wrong anyway. Ireland's rating is no longer investment grade, but it beats the hell out of Greece's, now 126th of 126 countries rated for investment purposes according to Michael Lewis' latest for Vanity Fair.

Back to discussion of Metro North please.

Any discussion regarding the wider Irish Economy can go in that forum.
