Tesco Bargains (Not Quite)

I'm not sure if I'm allowed put these in here but my put a wee smile of someones face for a moment. Was in tescos yesterday and saw these. Not quite the bargains I was expecting....See attached photos.....My camera ain't great on the phone so the quality isn't perfect but you'll get the jist.

There are probably load of these 'bargains' around the stores. How can someone not see that 2 x 3.49 is 6.98?

I imagine that this bargain would make more sense when you include the other items listed...

EDIT: not a huge amount more sense it would seem.

I am open to correction, but tesco pricing policy on overcharging could be availed of ?????

Buy 2 of the toothpaste for 7.00.

take photo of shelf showing 3.49 x (2) = 6.98

only 2c overcharge but usually customer service will give for free,

suggest you buy 4,6,8 tubes to make it worthwhile,( dont get greedy

)

Yellow-sticker fever. Some people tend to grab the 'bargain' before they look into the details.

One of the best/worst was 2 tubs of Gü for €5, not bad considering they're usually €3.99 each. However on one particular occassion they had the Rocky Road tubs priced at €1.74 or something. Queue several individual transactions at the self-serve till, the people behind thought I was nuts!

They were right but I didn't care

The other very common one to watch is 4 pack = €1, 12 pack = €4 but the 12 pack has a 'value' sticker. Cheese-strings is a prime example of this, 8's are much cheaper per unit than the 12's.

True, saw the eggs aswell, can't remember the exact price but 6 eggs x 2 are cheaper that 12 eggs x1 bout 20-30 cents in the difference.....

I copped the toothpaste multiple product issue alright but I have to say it is very misleading. The offer sticker was right below the ones that would make it dearer. And as for the booze, I wouldn't want to be getting charged that for every litre that I drank! Don't know how they worked that out, thought it just might be a decimal point issue but it seems that there is something either 'fourier' ot 'la place' in nature going on with their price/volume equations:-)

In Tesco Weetabix is the same. 2 x 24 is cheaper than 1 x 48. The reason for this is that the 24 pack is used to price compare the item across the other supermarkets so they keep this price down.

Yesterday I saw a batch of Canon Powershot A520 digicams in Tesco Killarney, with a price tag of €249 each. That type of camera is a 2005(!) model and probably never cost that amount even when it was new on the market.
I wonder where they found them, must have been a forgotten pallet in the very back of some warehouse in the middle of nowhere or something. But to price them way higher then most of the current models really is kind of bold...

Isn't the 'per litre/100ml', 'per kg/100g' a legal requirement and if so, aren't they legally obliged to get it right?

Often when they have an offer it's tricky to tell whether the per X price is standard, offer or out-of-arse.

Sometimes, the price you pay at the till is more than the offer price on the shelf.

It happens to me loads of times, I like it, coz I go to customer service, get my money back and the item for free. Its tesco policy to do that.

Tip:- Examine your till receipt before leaving the shop:cool:

Could be the case as said above that the non-original flavours are more than 3.50, in which case it is a saving.

The bud as a 20 pack.
300 mills of 20 pack = €15.00
Multiply 15.00 * 3.30 to increase to volume to 1 Litre and you get
1 Litre of 20pack = €49.95

Or more accurately
15 / 20 = .75 per can
€.75 / 300 = 0.0025 per millitre
€0.0025 * 1000 = €0.5 per litre per bottle
€0.5 * 20 cans = €50 per litre per 20 pack

The offer wont work, you'll be charged €6.98, just checked it on Tesco.ie.

But if you buy the mint and the original it will work.

The 2 euro shop in Waterford has the original one for €2 or 3 for a €5.

WHAT?

6 litres(20x300ml) is €15
=>1 litre is €2.50

its a 300 ml pack.. the price tag says the price for 1litre pack.. it makes no sense but meh..

I've often noticed that abut Weetabix but never copped that was the reason.

It could be this, and it could also be just economies of scale, most of the time the family size tins of beans or peas cost more than the standard tins, same with jars of curry sauce and other items. A lot of the time twin packs of coke cost more than 2 single 2L bottles, people just blindly pick them up, only themselves to blame. It could cost more for the company to buy a 48 empty carton than 2x24 ones.

By the way this is fairly common practice in the U.S., they quote the price of 2 items to encourage customers to buy two, even though they are not availing of any special offer saving by purchasing two instead of one. By the way if you ever see a 2 for €x deal and the price for a single item is not quoted, then you are entitled to buy a single item at the same price as the deal (i.e.. if it's 3 for €3 then one item will cost €1 unless a different individual price is quoted). It doesn't happen often over here but this is common practice in the states and most people are unaware of it.

It's definitely a legal requirement to have unit pricing. From Citizens Information:

Unit pricing
Unit pricing is a useful tool for comparing prices. It is most useful when comparing food and grocery prices when products come in different size packages. The price for a product tells you how much you pay for an item. The unit price, however, tells you the price of a Kg, litre, metre, square metre or cubic metre. Unit pricing helps you compare costs of different brands and various sizes without doing complicated calculations. The law, (SI 639 of 2002) sets down that unit prices must be displayed on or close to the item. There are exceptions for traders who do not have equipment for printing shelf-edge labels or for point-of-sale scanning. The Regulations only apply to products being sold to the consumer.

Tesco own brand small black forest cost €4.99 while their large one costs €3.49 and their €20 meal for 2 does not add up to €20 on certain selection of items if bought individually. BUYER BEWARE.

That Nestle Aero 46g is 0.89c in my local Tesco! The offer covers sweets from 0.81c to 0.89c ..Oh wait your photo is from 4 months ago.

The 2 for €6 offer encompasses products ranging from €2.40 to €5.45

Take it to the till - if it shows up at the standard price of €12, then claim it for free as the shelf sticker says €120.:D

This has been done to death, but for the sake of clarity .. the wording is:

"in the unlikely event of you being charged a price at the checkouts that is higher that the price mounted on the display, we will give you that item absolutely free and without quibble."

Prices in supermarkets go up and down from week to week. They release adverts saying we've cut 10,000 prices but what they dont tell you is they also may have put up 15,000 prices to compensate.

All about marketing.

The prices are like SeeSaw

But those mistakes are just silly.

where does that leave you then if they offer something for 4e or 2 for 10e. If you're charged 10 for 2, are you being over charged, or under charged if you're charged 4 for one. Are they covered for both prices, or neither. i.e. Is there quibble room here?.

Print off the wrong price and ring the store not to helpline, you'll get the refund. With the 2 for 10 but cheaper single prices, the offer just wont work, you pay the lower price, but if you mix with a dearer item fron the same offer it will work.
