    Right folks,

    I mentioned last year that we should do a longer cup competition with a group stage and I've been thinking about it for a few days. The easiest way I figure to run it is to tie it in with the Champions League fixtures so we'll have a group stage pre Xmas, followed by knockout competition next year when the CL knockout rounds start. This way the cup will run from near the start of the season to the end.

    So, if we run our fixtures on the weekend AFTER the CL fixtures, our cup gameweeks run like this:

    Match Day 1 is 17 - 18 September - Gameweek 5 21 September starting
    Match Day 2 is 1-2 October - Gameweek 7 5th October starting
    Match Day 3 is 22-23 October - Gameweek 9 26 October starting
    Match Day 4 is 5-6 November - Gameweek 11 9 November starting
    Match Day 5 is 26-27 November - Gameweek 13 30 November starting
    Match Day 6 is 10-11 December - Gameweek 15 14 December

    You get 3 points for a win and one for a draw as per a normal football table. Groups will always be sorted in 4 teams, no matter how many entrants we have. 2 teams from each group will go through to the knockout stage next Spring. 3rd placed team goes into the FSA Europa Cup and 4th well.... just goes away!

    You'll play your first fixture in GW5 and play that team again in GW12 so both teams should have changed considerably enough between fixtures to make it interesting. The same goes for your other games.

    I don't know how many groups there'll be because I'll have to see what interest there is. I'd be hoping and expecting that we get at least 32 entrants so that we can run 8 groups of 4. If we even got 64 teams all I'd do is add an extra knockout phase sometime next year because we'd have 32 teams rather than 16 in the knockout stages.

    Now to the rules:

    1. Like the actual Champions League, teams will be seeded for the draw so everyone will need to provide their rank from last year. They will also be seeded in the first part of the second round knockout stage, just like the CL. From there on, its open draw. I think seeding based on last year alone is the fairest way to do it as some people are playing longer than others.

    2. The closing date for entries will be the beginning of GW3, 31 August at 12.45. I have to cut entrants off then as, depending on the number of teams, if we end up with an odd amount there may need to be a qualifying round for some of the lower seeded teams in GW4. My hope would be to get 32 or 64 teams or a number that is nice to work with but that may not happen so we may need to cut a few before the competiton begins. I'll do my best to include everyone though.

    3. If two teams are equal on points after the group stages, like the CL it goes to head to head record against each other (e.g. who won the most of their two games against each other). If both won one game against each other, then there'll be a final play off round in Gameweek 18. This will not go to aggregate scores between their two games.

    4. In the second knockout round after Xmas, games will be aggregate based over two gameweeks like the real CL. We'll worry about those fixtures etc. at Xmas after we have the group stage over.

    5. For future rules we need, I will try to go with general consensus and what people want but if agreement can't be reached then the mods (FutureGuy and Mr Moon) have final say, unless a decision directly involves them if they enter.

    *I won't clog up the thread with other talk, will keep it simple by just entering the rank of that actual team, but I did finish in the top 5k last season, as I said here near the start of last season, Bamburys bookmakers offered odds on their league, they obviously checked previous season's because my team was only 33/1 but herself's team (a new entry) was 150/1, so we decided to stick a nice lump on that and use that as my team for the season, so any discussions I did on here last season were based on her (my) team. my actual rank was 4922, but if you want to stick with the one for this team that's fine, completely your call and cheers for organising this.
