Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Because this topic seems to come up a lot, what are people's opinions of the accomodation in or around GMIT?

First off; I'll attempt to go through the student villages. If I miss anything, please let me know.

Glasan Student Village - It is quite literally a minute walk across the road. Facilities include: Laundrette, Restaurant (though I hear rumours that this is closing down?), shop.

Gleann Na Ri - A 5-10 minute walk to the front gate of Gleann Na Ri. Nice enough apartments. Facilities include: Laundrette, fast-food restaurant, shop, creche.

Cuirt Na Rasai - A 10-15 minute walk from GMIT. I'm not entirely sure what facilities there are. Hopefully someone will let me know.

If you do not wish to live in the Student Villages, there are many student-friendly houses in the vicinity. Ballybane, Lurgan Park, to name but a few. You can use www.daft.ie and the Galway Advertiser website, which gets updated every wednesday online I believe.

Any more enquiries can be asked here, or you should check out the Accomodation office in GMIT itself.

Glasan Student Village - It is quite literally a minute walk across the road. Facilities include: Laundrette, Restaurant (though I hear rumours that this is closing down?), shop.

BTW the restaurant is just getting renovated

    With Glasan:
    Pro's:
Its really close to GMIT (really handy)
    Good craic

    Con's:
Management will screw you on deposit, and bills etc.(There assholes)
    It's can get really loud
    Secuirty is a joke
    No washing machines/dryer's.
The internet is ridiculously slow(Its like 56k,:pac:)

Cuirt Na Rasai - A 10-15 minute walk from GMIT. I'm not entirely sure what facilities there are. Hopefully someone will let me know.[/QUOTE]

Cuirt na Rasai: I lived here during the year and its a really great place, management are sound as,the apartments are a good size/comfortable
The broadband goes down quite abit but its really fast otherwise (+5megs).

The only quarrel i'd have with Cuirt na Rasai is that it definately isnt 15 mins walk, its a solid 25mins,20mins if your an olympic walker, some people might contest this, but there blowing ****e, believe me I've been at it all year!

    TL;DR Version: Glasan for closeness
Cuirt na Rasai if you have a car!
Lurgan Park/Belmont if your with friends!

    Hope this helps! :D

No torrents or anything,in fact you'll be lucky to load Google in under a minute its so slow at peak times (in other words its fuckin useless)

The internet in glasan is awful. All sorts of firewalls and its as slow as a wet week.

The Student Union also have a list of private accomodation that is catered towards students
    http://www.gmitsu.ie/uploads/Private%20Accommodation%2009-10.pdf

This list gets updated once or twice a week and is quite useful.

    I'm hoping that someone can help me;
living in rented accommodation and my washing maching has been broken for a months,it was replaced but that one didn't work either, so i've been ringing both landlord and the company who left the other washing machine...this company keeps promising to fix it every day but hasn't done so.. landlord has been calling too... ( so they say!)

could some one advise me as to who should be calling the company, and what should i do as it nearly two months?any other action i could take?

please any advise would be great!:)

AFAIK it should be the landlord who sorts this out.

Contact threshold in Galway for advice. Your landlord is pulling the p*** and needs a root up the h***. Threshold will inform you of your rights and how best to approach your landlord (i.e. nice big legal words to get him off his lazy a***)

is anyone still looking to houseshare?

where are you looking to live do you know? im looking to move to a place more closer to cluain Mhuire campus with a mate and the houses around tara grove and welpark road are sold as a unit and not per room,if you get my drift,if a group of four move to a house it can work out just over 50 yoyo a week which isn't bad

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 alice_wisdom

Hey, yeah Id be looking around that campus and would love to live in a 4person house. 50 euros a week is really good, what are you guys studying?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 liv119

Hey guys, I'm going into my second year in FTV in Cluain Mhuire. Just a heads up, Tara Grove is a ****hole. I lived there last year. The houses are FREEZING. Remember that particularly cold spell of a winter we had? Yeah, could see my own breath even when I was wearing hoodies, trousers and two duvets.
Also we have a double room going in the docks which is about a 20 min walk from there. It's 300pm. Which is a really good deal for what you're getting right in the centre of town. If you think you can tolerate a few parties and music and such then please do message me as we need to find a housemate. :)

Tara Grove is fine i lived there last year, it's only cold if your too stingy to put on the oil. Very handy for the art college also as you're right beside it

sorry to drag an old thread but hoping to get into gmit for this coming sept and will be most deffo b looking for somewhere to stay - coming from wicklow.

i'll b 26 yrs old. but at the same time i don't know a soul, don't know the area, wouldn't have to foggiest where to look for accommodation etc (particularly the private type). it'l be my first year and am already stressed to the eyeballs trying to make sure everything is in place so i would be looking for the most stress free way of finding decent accommodation. i also can't be legging it back and forth across the country time and time again to look at places, the cost of petrol and whatnot is just to great. cost me the bones of €70 to come across for my interview there last week!

cheers for all the help in advance

Hey hdowney, ill be starting in gmit as a mature student myself so i know the feeling, but i know Galway pretty well.Your prob not interested in the student villages but if you are there as follows, glasan, gleann na ri, cuirt na rasai and tir na capall a quick google will give you there websites.
If you go to gmitsugalway.com there is an accommodation list on there with lots of houses/rooms etc. Also daft.ie and galway advertiser will be very handy too.
    Hope this hepls anyway.
