I don't know if this is the right thread for this query, but I know of no other. Every Christmas/New Year that I remember various newspapers have carried a calendar of sports fixtures for the coming year, including Irish Times, Examiner, Indo, Observer, Sunday Times. This year only the Examiner seems to have produced this. Did anybody see a calendar in any other publication? Or have the rest surrendered to the internet?

    Swimming Olympic Qualifying Standards Announced

FINA have released details of the Olympic qualification standards for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
The qualification period commences on March 1st of this year with the deadline on July 3rd, 2016.

A maximum of 2 swimmers per nation can enter each individual event. Swimmers who achieve the OQT (A standard) may be automatically selected by their federation, while swimmers with the lesser OST (B standard) will have to await an invitation from the international governing body FINA as they distribute the Olympic quotas until the maximum threshold of 900 swimmers is satisfied.

In terms of numbers, Ireland will probably be looking at another modest swimming team for the Olympics, not helped by the fact that Barry Murphy is now retired. Nevertheless, Sycerika McMahon and Fiona Doyle will be looking to wrap up qualification as early as possible.
We also have a very exciting young prospect in 13-year-old Tallaght swimmer, Antoinette Neamt. She has already established herself on the national scene, winning junior and senior titles as well as breaking Irish junior and senior records.
She is also ranked among the very elite of her age group at international level. There is every possibility that she will gain Olympic experience as early as Rio 2016, she is already within reach of making the team.

Brendan Hyland, Nicholas Quinn, Dan Sweeney, Bethany Carson, Andrew Meegan, Jordan Sloan, Curtis Coulter and Melanie Houghton (former Aussie swimmer) are amongst some of our best hopes of making the Olympic swim team. Chris Bryan is also a prospect in the open water swimming event, having just missed out on qualification for London 2012 by one place.

Oh ok. That would be great news and I hope he does however this thread is about Rio not London. Still great to see cheats exposed.

In dressage news, Judy Reynolds had a good weekend at the World Cup stage in Neumunster, Germany, achieving a personal best score onboard Vancouver K to finish 15th overall.
Judy set a personal best of 69.00% in the Grand Prix class, placing her inside the top 15 combinations to qualify for the Freestyle class. She went on to achieve a score of 71.575% in that element, eclipsing her previous best of 70.000%.
So overall, a good weekend for Judy. It's not an earth-shattering result by any means but slowly Irish dressage is making progress.
We competed with a dressage team at the World Equestrian Games last year which was a step in the right direction.
It's also notable that in the last couple of seasons, our eventing teams have improved their dressage scores which has been the traditional achilles' heel of Irish eventing teams. So any progress in dressage, however slow, is to be welcomed.

    Men's Field Hockey -
    Olympic Qualification Tournament

Ireland's men's team got off to the perfect start to their Olympic qualifying campaign with an 8-0 thrashing of Chile.
This tournament which is being staged in San Diego, USA, is the first step in the Rio 2016 Olympic qualification pathway for Ireland. There are 8 teams divided into 2 pools of 4 teams each.
All 8 teams qualify for the knock-out round. The knock-out system is as follows: the winner of Pool A play the last placed team in Pool B, 2nd in Pool A vs 3rd in Pool B and vice versa.

Only the top 3 nations at the end of the tournament will qualify for the next stage of Olympic qualification so Ireland need to win their first knock-out match to stay alive.
Ireland are strong favourites to qualify from this tournament alongside Canada but they'll need to be vigilant. After the pool stage, one bad result could put an end to their Olympic dream.
Good luck to the boys in green! Great start so far :)

The Irish men's team continued their good start to the Rio 2016 qualification process, securing a 3-1 victory over Austria. Despite dominating the encounter in awful weather conditions, the performance was far from convincing and the Irish were made to sweat in the closing stages when Austria pegged them back to 2-1 and were pressing hard for an equaliser.
Still, all 3 points were secured which is the most important thing for now. There is a rest day today with play resuming tomorrow against Italy.

    Men's Field Hockey -
    Olympic Qualification Tournament

Ireland came through their pool unbeaten after a 2-0 win over Italy last night. Again, the performance was a bit worrying as the Irish squandered many chances and perhaps didn't create enough goal-scoring opportunities. Against better opposition they would be punished, but their 100% record is still intact and even an under-par Irish team should be able to make it through this tournament without too much difficulty.
Up next is a must-win game against tournament whipping boys Trinidad and Tobago tomorrow. A victory in that match would leave the Irish just one win away from securing their passage to the next stage of the Olympic qualification process. A defeat would end their Olympic dream there and then so the stakes are high.....best of luck to the boys in green!

    Olympic Qualification Tournament

Ireland secured their 4th successive victory in this week's tournament with a 12-2 demolition of Trinidad and Tobago. The win means Ireland now have two chances to progress to the next stage of Olympic qualification as a victory in either of their two remaining matches will see them advance.
Up next is a match against Canada, possibly the trickiest opposition team for the Irish in this competition.
If Ireland play to their full potential they should be too much to handle for the Canadians....anything less and the door is open for Canada to turn us over as they will punish the sloppy play that perhaps went unpunished so far by lesser teams.
That match is scheduled for 21:00 Irish time on Saturday (tomorrow is a rest day). Let's hope we'll be celebrating our qualification to the next phase of Olympic qualification on Saturday night.... best of luck!!

There's good news to report tonight as Ireland's men booked their place in the next stage of Olympic qualification with a 2-0 win over Canada this evening. A great 3rd-quarter for Ireland provided 2 goals and the Irish lads never looked in trouble after that. Up next in the final is a re-match against Pool A runners-up Austria. Both teams will desperately want to claim the honour of champions in this event, but both can be comfortable in the knowledge that they have secured their place in the next round of qualification for Rio 2016. That tournament will take place in Argentina in June where the Olympic quotas will be distributed.
Canada and Russia face-off tomorrow for the final remaining qualification berth.

Qualification process for Irish 7s rugby team announced today
Next step in picking squad is this weekend. Then exiles and academy players etc from each of the provinces are looked at
The selected squad will compete in 3 rounds of the GB Sevens in Edinburgh, Coventry and Colwyn Bay

Ireland will be competing in the very last rung of the European Championships in Division C, which takes place in the city of Zenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 6/7 June and our opposition will be: Bosnia, Turkey, Estonia, Serbia, Belarus, Austria, Iceland, Montenegro, Liechtenstein, San Marino and Malta
Pool A: Bosnia, Austria, Iceland, Malta
Pool B: Turkey, Belarus, Montenegro, Ireland
Pool C: Estonia, Serbia, Liechtenstein, San Marino
Ireland need to finish in the top four of the competition to advance into Division B in Zagreb, Croatia on 20/21 June
The best placed team in Division B then qualifies for the European Olympic Repêchage Tournament on 25/26 July and the winner of that qualifies for Rio

I should point out there are other boxers like David Oliver Joyce who could medal but thought 4 boxers was enough

You would now 1000 more things then me Dan, but I do have a feeling we will get at least 1 surprise medal next year.

When I mean surprise I mean something like Sailing or cycling or something away from our boxers.

Rory offers us a great chance in Golf not sure of layout of the course and who it might suit etc.

I reckon we will do much better in swimming this time around too although don't see medals obviously.

I be bold and say we will win Men's Gold in the Boxing and Katie to pull another out of the bag also. If Conlon matures he is good enough for Gold. Barnes will medal but reckon he may just come up short. Joyce is like Conlon, needs to mature but if he does I reckon he could be top in Rio.

Irvine is my dark horse for a medal though. Reckon he could have a good games.

Whatever happened to Grainne Murphy and Sycerica McMahon? They seemed like two great prospects at one stage. Did they just fade away from contention or will they be aiming for Rio?

It would be great to qualify for a team event this time to boost our numbers. Hockey probably the best hope - no real chance of a medal but it would be nice to have them there to follow throughout the olympics.

Sycerika will likely qualify for Rio without too much difficulty but she hasn't progressed as hoped and it's unlikely she can challenge for medals. Even making a final would take a big step-up from her.
The illness that scuppered Grainne Murphy's Olympics continued to hamper her progress long after the Games had come and gone. Her return to competitive swimming has thus far not looked very promising, just making the Olympic team will be a tough ask for her.

We have an outstanding young talent in Antoinette Neamt. She has a great chance to qualify in the long distance freestyle events for Rio 2016 when she would only be 15 years of age. Because she is so young it would be unfair to comment much about her prospects at this stage. Let's hope she can continue to make significant progress as this is a vital point in her career and a time when you might expect visible year-on-year improvements.

I'm really hoping and praying we can qualify a showjumping team this time having missed out on Beijing and London. By simply qualifying a showjumping team we are significantly improving our medal prospects. Showjumping is unpredictable and anything could happen so if we qualify we could be hopeful of challenging for a podium. Also by qualifying a team it gives us 4 medal chances in the individual event. If we don't qualify it is very damaging as at most we can only qualify 2 riders individually and even securing those 2 spots is far from a straight-forward process. Despite just missing out on qualification for the Olympics at the World Equestrian Games, it will be a very daunting task to secure qualification in the next and final opportunity at the European Championships. 3 team quotas are up for grabs but we face stiff opposition from teams from Great Britain, Switzerland and Belgium and other teams like Italy, Norway, Spain and others could have a good day and push for qualification also. We have a good chance of course and while we can be very hopeful it will be extremely difficult.

It's even worse than that Dan. If the team doesn't qualify, only one rider from Western Europe is likely to be qualify. So if, for example, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy qualify as teams I'd expect Ireland to have no riders at the Olympics as the Western Europe individual would go to Scott Brash of GB as World number 1

However, I think Ireland will qualify

We had a disaster at the Euros in 2013 and still might have made it. We're much stronger now and should be competing for medals at the Euros, never mind qualifying

There is still scope to qualify 2 individual riders as there are 4 additional places for the highest ranked individual riders not already qualified, regardless of which region those riders are from.
I think we have a good chance but Belgium have a terrific team of riders to choose from right now and Britain should be strong, even if they have been inconsistent more recently.....and Switzerland are always solid. If we don't perform to our best or near to it then we probably won't qualify. But not to be negative, I think we will do it, especially with Bertram Allen in the team.

    Women's Field Hockey -
    Olympic Qualification Tournament

The Irish women's team began their Olympic qualifying with a comfortable 5-0 win over Ukraine at the National Hockey Centre in UCD this afternoon. It's a terrific start to the tournament for the Irish team who have the benefit of home advantage at this event. Ireland's dominance was evident from the off in this game and with better finishing could have added even further to their goal tally..... but a 5 goal opening victory is a pleasing start and sets this tournament up nicely for us.

As with the men's team last week, this is the first step in Olympic qualification for the Irish women.

Ireland are strong favourites to qualify from this tournament and again Canada could well be our biggest rivals. Chile will also provide decent opposition and Belarus could be dangerous so there is no room for complacency. One bad result could put an end to their Olympic dream.

    Pool A:
    Mar. 14 (14:45) Ireland 5-0 Ukraine

Our eventing team qualified (4 quotas) after finishing 6th at the World Equestrian Games and quotas were claimed at the World Sailing Championships in 2014 in men's Laser, women's Laser, men's 49er (so that's another 4 athlete quotas).
We have 8 athletes qualified so far.

Ireland continued on winning ways this afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Canada in UCD. It will be an encouraging result to take forward to the rest of the tournament as Canada are earmarked as one of our main rivals here. Still, the result should perhaps have been more comprehensive in terms of the final scoreline but a win is a win and that's the important thing at this stage. Up next is a game against the Turkey on Tuesday afternoon and should be a comfortable win on paper for the Irish.

Ireland swept aside the challenge put in front of them today, storming to a 13-0 victory over Turkey this afternoon. The result means Ireland top Pool A and have a must-win knock-out tie against Lithuania who prop up Pool B after their series of matches. On paper this should be a comfortable victory for the Irish women but just to reiterate, an unlikely defeat against Lithuania would end our hopes of Olympic qualification.

Top 2 from this tournament qualify for the next stage in the World League / Olympic qualification. However, the highest ranked nation who finishes 3rd in one of these tournaments also advances to the next stage. What this means is that if Ireland finish in 3rd place here, we will be sure to advance to the next stage courtesy of our superior world ranking ahead of the 3rd-placed teams in the other tournaments.

Ireland are now just one win away from progressing to the next stage of Olympic qualification after a 2-0 win against Lithuania. Ireland were never troubled in the match but having pressed in the opponents circle for long stretches of the game, perhaps the Irish team will be a little disappointed with their end product today..... but a win is a win and at this stage nothing else matters.

The draw for the men's semi finals has been made.

Ireland are in the Belgian Group and have been drawn in pool 2

    In Pool B are
    Britain, Belgium, Malaysia and Egypt

In the other Pool is Australia, India, Pakistan, Poland, France.

India is already qualfied but it's likely Ireland will have to finish in top 3 to qualify for Rio. A very, very tough ask

Also Cian O'Connor had a win in Show Jumping with his new horse. He specifically mentioned that this would be his Olympic horse

He was 2nd in the speed event on Sunday

Excellent result in Cairo for our Modern Pentathletes. Does anyone know what the qualification process is for these two outstanding competitors. They took London by storm and hopefully will qualify for Rio.

Qualification is already underway and the first direct chance they will have to qualify is at the World Cup Final in Minsk in June. This seems an unlikely pathway though as only the men's and women's champion will qualify via this route and Natalya still has a lot of work to do just to qualify for the World Cup Final.

The next direct opportunity to qualify is at the World Championships in July of this year. However, only the top 3 finishers (not already qualified) in the men's and women's events will qualify via this pathway.

Therefore, a much more likely opportunity to qualify comes just after that at the European Championships in August. The top 8 finishers (not already qualified) in the men's and women's events will book their tickets to Rio 2016.
Hopefully we can get at least one qualifier by that stage but if not there are still plenty of opportunities to qualify, with the World Championships in 2016 providing another 3 quotas per gender and the final remaining quotas (6) being distributed through the Olympic ranking system. Arthur is already in a strong position to qualify, he just needs to continue current form and he'll easily make the team for Rio. Natalya has had a few problems this year and although there is nothing to panic about yet, she will need to turn things around very soon. Failing to make the World Cup Final this year would be a blow to her chances but there would still be a lot to play for. Besides she still has time to make the World Cup Final this season and gain valuable Olympic ranking points.

Is there an equivalent event to the relay event at World Cups in the Olympics in Modern Pentathlon? To be honest I don't really understand how the various competitions work in that sport.

No unfortunately it's not an Olympic event and as such the appetite of the powerhouse nations to participate in this event at World Cup level shifts quite often. Sometimes they participate, other times not. Still, back to back silvers (and very nearly gold last weekend) is a wonderful achievement by our duo. They are putting Ireland firmly on the modern pentathlon world map.
