Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How academic is TY in your schools? My year always gets the raw deal (second year trip to barcelona happened for years and ended the year we were meant to go). We've been told that this year, there'll be more focus on actually learning in class (was actually looking forward to a doss year). Also, our summer exams will decide the classes/levels for the leaving.

Not very academic really. Maths, English and Irish are maintained, but as for every other subject, no.

The TY's in our school go skiing to Italy for a week each year, but it costs about €900 and I don't know if I can rationalise spending that amount of spondulicks:confused:

And there's no summer tests either, our junior cert decides what level we take at LC.

From what I've heard from TY's gone by in our school, the first 2 weeks are torturous, ridiculous amount of sitting around. But that could be down to most people having an idea in their head like: "I'm in TY, why amn't I being entertained?"

Yeah my brother said when he did TY it was extremely boring the first 3 weeks but apparently they keep it boring so some people with drop out of the year! Like 10 people dropped out when he did it saying "they thought it would be better"

How big are everyone's TY years on here?

From our original group of 108 3rd Years, about 70 are doing TY and ~35 going on to fifth year (taking into account the odd drop out/moving schools)

God your back so early! I have to go in on Monday to mentor a group of first years and then we aren't back to school until the 1st of September! I'm actually looking forward to going back :D

What does everyone else pay for transition year in your school??

We pay €250 at the beginning of the year which includes locker rental and the school journal but we still have to pay separately for all the trips we will go on

We pay €20?!?!?! That's for locker rental, journal and obviously photocopying etc! Why is yours so expensive?!

Do you know what your fee includes? I presume ours includes weekly modules too but its still a lot of money

We paid €150 for books and locker fee, same as every other year group, some of our trips are subsidised by the School and some are left to ourselves to cough upgroup

Thats probably a fair amount if it includes all your trips. A friend one year said they nearly paid a thousand euro with trips and all! And this year we are going to London

Ours includes all our modules like zumba and martial arts, drama classes, etc, all that sort of stuff! Our two big trips this year (Carlingford(150euros) and Alton Towers(300euros)) we have to pay for separately :(

We pay a couple of hundred I think its about 500 and we pay it when we accept our place in TY and that covers everything except for Gaisce and for the trip abroad both of which are optional.

My old school went skiing last year in Italy too! But they got really good deal for €609. That's one of the reasons I don't want to move because the new school hasn't gone abroad for ty

just wondering about work experience. What happens or what do you do if you want or have a work experience placement for a week that isn't in the prescribed weeks given by the school

I don't think you're marked absent for that week, they must just mark you down that you're doing work experience! Idk if that answers your question at all hahah

It depends on the placement in my school. Ask your year head, if its a really good placement they may let you do it outside of the prescribed weeks.

That's actually so stupid. Why make you go in for one day and then it's the weekend ?

They slowly bring everyone back in our school. 1st years today, JC and LC tomorrow, 2nd years on Wednesday, 5th years on Thursday, and TY's on Friday.

It's just how it's always done, I'm fairly neutral about it myself. Nothing is done in the first week in my school anyway, regardless of what year it is. So I'm kinda glad to be catching the end of the week of "somewhat-organised chaos" and start properly on Monday.

I'm back tomorrow 2 - 4 and then full day on Friday (which is actually only till half 1) I think they do it to ease us in!

I guess that makes sense then. I thought the whole school was back on the same day :o

Got my timetable today. We're doing a good few modules (horticulture, home ec. politics, etc.) I doubt philosophy with the most boring teacher of all time will be much fun though :( Overall, I'm really excited for the year :D

    I'm back Thursday too.

We're due to start work experience the 1st of September (Monday :o), will I be annihilated if I've not got any work experience?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,474 ✭✭✭VG31

I have got work experience organised but there's always going to be people who have forgotten, haven't bothered or had trouble getting work experience so I wouldn't worry too much, you won't be the only one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 311 ✭✭Msrebeckyxo

In my school the Ty coordinator told us we need it every Friday, but a past TY student told us that you only need the minimum of 1 Friday! So I say you'll be grand!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭nanook5

I've been going to bed at 5AM for the last like 5 days . I'm f*cked for getting up at 6:50 in the morning :pac: :D

Solictors, barristers, fashion designers and a few newspapers (my mams friend works in the Irish times) I've sent soooo many emails and the only ones I've gotten back are people saying they're full!

Of course it would help if we were actually told our work experience dates...

Go into places with CVs and ask can you speak to the manager, cause I don't think any of the shop staff bother giving them in! Write on the top of your CV "ty work experience' cause the manager will probs think its just for a job and they get loads of CVs about jobs!

I wasn't looking forward to double music this morning expecting it to just be theory. We get in, and the teacher tells us that the school has bought 25 ukuleles and that we'll get to keep them for 7-8 weeks. I now can't wait for music, and I think I may buy one myself when I have to give it back, and they're only 25 euro. Really looking forward to this year!
