Hi, I had a cycling accident 2 months ago, went to VHI a few weeks but they weren't much good as I suspect it's a ligament tear and they only gave me an X Ray. What I want to know is can you book an MRI scan privately or would you just have to call in and wait till they're ready? Willing to go to a private hospital if needs be.

Think this is the right forum and no medical advice needed, just information on how to get an MRI scan without having to wait hours in hospital.

    Thanks!

You'd need to be referred for one by a doctor. You can't book it yourself. ED is not an appropriate place to go. GP is the person to speak to.

Go to a GP for a referral. EDs are already overscribed by people unnecessarily utilizing them.

GP and private MRI and you could have it done in a few days.

AE can't refer you for an MRI so don't waste your time. Can be done privately by a GP or if can't afford that (or don't have insurance as its usually covered fully) then can get referred to orthopaedics who may refer you for one.

Sorry to correct you fowly old boy but any doctor can refer for MRI
The requirement is for a referral letter
The issue may be the insurer (if relevant) may not cover cost unless referee is a specialist

Cost in some centres for MR can be as low as €150- they work on volume
Wait for orth OPD for a sprain could be months which by that time won't need an MRI in most cases as will either have resolved OR....
