Once again, I've prepared a summary of products/functionality available on LEAP, which brings together all of the information publicly available. I'm doing this due to reading regular questions on boards.ie, and due to the fact that I think that the level of information available on official sites leaves a lot to be desired in terms of collating the information in one simple location.

If you do spot something that needs updating let me know.

I've updated this thread for the additional functionality that has been added recently, including:

    • LEAP 90 rebate introduced on Dublin Bus
    • LEAP now includes period passes on Cork Suburban Rail
    • LEAP now includes period passes on City Direct Galway City services
    • Limits on Xpresso and Outer Suburban contribution towards Dublin Bus and multi-operator caps are removed.
    • LEAP now fully valid on Bus Eireann routes 100X and 101
    Future developments will include:
    • LEAP epurse to be launched on Cork Suburban Rail services to Cobh and Midleton in Q1 2015
    • Travel rebates to be extended to other operators in Greater Dublin area
    • LEAP to be accepted on Ashbourne Connect coach service between Ashbourne and Dublin city centre.

      LEAP 90 DISCOUNT

If you take two or more journeys on Dublin Bus within 90 minutes of starting the first trip, using the LEAP pay-as-you-go epurse, then a discount (as listed below) will automatically apply to the second and any subsequent trips taken within 90 minutes of the first.

      Discount Levels – Adult/Student €1 / Child €0.75 / City Centre Fare €0.60

Note that the discount does not apply to Airlink or Tour services.

It is intended to extend this rebate to other operators in 2015.

      =============================================================================== ==========================

      TOPPING UP LEAP CARD E-PURSE

The LEAP card e-purse can be topped up a number of different ways:
    • At one of over 400 Payzone LEAP card agents around Dublin, Cork and Galway.
    • At any LUAS ticket machine
    • At any Irish Rail ticket machine in the Short Hop Zone
    • Online at www.leapcard.ie - Note that this option requires you to subsequently visit your nominated "load location" to physically load the top-up amount onto the card. Note that online topups cannot be applied to your LEAP card via Dublin Bus or indeed other bus operator onboard ticket machines due to their memory constraints.
    • Via Auto top-up - this is the easiest way of topping up the card. It automatically tops up your Leap Card with funds from your bank account, whenever your Travel Credit balance falls below €10. You can choose to Auto Top-Up by €30.00, €40.00 or €50.00. Note that this requires your card to be registered on the LEAP website and a direct debit to be set up.
      =============================================================================== ==========================

      SINGLE OPERATOR PERIOD PASSES:
The following unlimited travel period passes / tickets can be loaded onto a LEAP card, either online (requires you to then visit a payzone outlet) or at a payzone outlet directly:

    Discount Levels – Adult/Student €1 / Child €0.75 / City Centre Fare €0.60

What does City Centre Fare €0.60 mean ? If I get a bus to O'Connell St and a other to Mount St it's free? Isn't the City Centre Fare 55 cent?

http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Fares--Tickets/Leapcard/ seems to suggest 55 cent and its free

The fares have changed effective 1st December:
    http://dublinbus.ie/en/Fares--Tickets/Fare-Information/Fares/

The City Centre fare is now €0.60.

Unfortunately they don't seem to have updated all of the other pages yet.

What the discount means is that if you take a city centre fare, then the full €0.60 will be refunded to you.

So a bus from Mount St to O'Connell and return within 90 minutes would be 60 cent?

Mount Street is outside the city centre fare zone.
See the valid area on this map:
    http://dublinbus.ie/PageFiles/2512/city_centre_fares.pdf

The city centre fare is valid only to stop 409 on Merrion Square North, and from stop 493 on Merrion Square North.

So, a return trip from stop 493 to the city centre and back to stop 409 will cost €0.60 if the return trip is made within 90 minutes.

    To/from Mount Street would be €1.50 + €1.50 less €1.00 = €2.00

Has anyone tried starting with the city centre fare for 60 cents, then getting the one euro discount for say a 2.05 fare?

    Might be interesting.

Just so you all know, since I posted in the October updates thread, leap card credit can now be used on routes 100x and 101 to buy single tickets. There is no longer any exception listed for the leapcard page for Bus Eireann in the Greater Dublin area. I've also been emailing the NTA about the subject and they confirmed the same :)

Thanks for that - I'll update the main section!

Unfortunately - someone should tell Bus Eireann!!

*Please note, Travel Credit cannot be used to purchase Adult single fares on Route 100x DAP- Drogheda-Dundalk and Route 101 DAP – Balbriggan – Drogheda.
    is still on their website!

Or the NTA; the leapcard website is far worse than the BE, DB or IE ones. Despite being the youngest of the 4 websites its looks and functions are the most dated. And the information on it is patchy and difficult to find to say the least.

What is the new maximum fare on the leap card. Is it €2.60?

Well that depends upon which operator you are using, and what sort of trip you are taking!

    LEAP fares are listed here.

I presume the 90 min discount doesn't apply to nightlink fares?

Normal Dublin bus route -Max is 2.60

    Xpresso - 2.85

If you board a bus near the destination terminus does the right hand validator deduct the correct fare? or the usual right hand fare?

It will deduct the maximum fare, unfortunately they're not enabled to automatically reduce the fare the closer you get to the terminus.

    I guessed as much.
It's awful feicing slow using leapcard with the driver....
We'll be waiting a fair few months updates from lxflyer before this improves I suspect

Do you know how these are supposed to be picked up? I had a personalised Leap with Annual Bus and Rail taxsaver last year but the Accounts department still haven't told me how/when I get my 2015 ticket

Last time I was told you need to go into a Leap Card agent shop and get them to check the balance. I don't know if the date you do this is critical.

Though I was also told I could use an Irish Rail validator if its after the renewal date.

Mines rail only but I assume (perhaps incorrectly) because yours is also rail it will work the same way.

Neither did mine. In fairness the language that leap cards use is a bit cryptic. Never mind how they record the transactions on your account.

I emailed them directly to ask about the updates. I got that bit about the validitor from their reply. The thing in the shop worked for me. But can't be certain of the date. The reported balance on the shop was zero. But it seems to update the card.

Afaik buses don't have a live link. They only update back at base Maybe there is more to it than that.

They don't need a live link, just don't have enough memory to hold a list of all the potential topups pending collection. Also, when the Payzone device said zero balance for you, it's because it was looking at credit. You should be able to see if the update went through when you put the card into a Ticket Vending Machine.

All Irish Rail taxsavers should be updated through usage, by tagging on/off. Same with most of the Luas ones, however I think the Luas/Dublin Bus combi may need to be collected at Payzone.

Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann ones are Payzone only as far as I'm aware.

    ****Speculation warning****

There are some new ticket machines after being installed on bus Eireann limerick city routes, I also overheard 2 drivers mention the words "leap card" on the 304 the other day

A sign of things to come?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 11,587 Mod ✭✭✭✭devnull

The *new* ticket machines being installed are the same ones that Dublin Bus have now.

Bus Eireann are using an even older model than Dublin Bus.

Sounds contradictory but I have it on good word that they are the same ones

I don't think this is it.
The bus should know where it is, I mean how would real time passenger info work without this?
The driver should also update the stage/location of the bus too, so there's 2 systems telling the bus where it is.

twice I put my card on the drivers panel, told the driver the craic, he pressed whatever buttons he needed, and rested his citiog on his lap as if he was done, I moved my card and was called back as there was a card read error.

Even ignoring the card read error, the time until I started to move my card was much longer than a cash transaction would have taken.

What is the difference with the validator on the right hand side and the one on the drivers ticket machine?
