Best option for web design on a laptop

I'm currently using a Compaq with AMD Dual Core TK-53, 1.71 GHz cpu and 1 Gig of ram and am running Fireworks, Photoshop and Dreamweaver but very slowly to switch between apps. Was thinking of moving to Mac but would I be as well just beefing up on a new ordinary lappie or will the cost of that be pointless? Help!! :(

Well, you need more RAM for a start. Is it running Vista or XP?
