    Hi looking for some help as i'm a complete numpty when it comes to computers. My son downloaded Steam a few days ago and bought a couple of games with a voucher he got for christmas, playing them quite happily until this morning when he went to turn the pc back on and it came up with a black screen and no bootmanager message and we couldn't get into the system to do anything. To cut a long story we installed recovery discs and reset the whole thing.

    Now the problem begins, he re-installed Steam and went to play one of the games City Life 2008 and it literally won't do anything it just says installing but it's doing nothing, occasionally he gets a pop up box saying updating but again nothing happens. It was left like this for 5hrs. He even tried deleting it but it again does nothing. If he goes to download another game he bought WarHammer theres no problem, but he really wants to play City Life as it really is his sort of game.

    Any suggestions as to how we can get it working?

    A couple of things to check;
    Start steam and right click on the game name and select properties, then go to local files and click "Verify Integrity Of Game Files".
    If it says "All files sucessfully validated" it means the game is fully downloaded and OK.

    Try to run it again. If there is still a problem, it maybe a graphics driver issue as someone did mention it here;

    Try going to contol panel, device manager, display adaptors and right click on the whatever is in there and select "update driver software"

    All else fails, quit Steam, delete the clientregistry.blob file from the Steam directory (or move it elsewhere) and restart Steam. Then try and install the game again.
