Larry Gogan is on with Tubridy tomorrow morning to play the first christmas song and Dave Fanning's Fab 50 is back for the 35th year in a row on christmas week.

You registered on boards just to say this?

Erm - I don't see anything wrong with either of these to tell the truth. 2fm's problems run far deeper than the two cheap potshots you've taken.

I remember I used to tape the top 50 on a cassette recorder.

Oh I wish I still had those tapes

Remember cleaning the heads on the tape recorder with a cotton bud

I bet the Top 50 that you recorded back in the day hasn't changed too much from the one that'll come out this year ;)

    Fannings Fab ... 60

    He's 59 now

Was listening yesterday morning to the new guy, his name escapes me, he's on before Fanning, anyway, he played a bizarre remix mashup featuring Kanye West song... The unedited version.. Excellent because I really want to hear tthe word "motherfu***ers" blaring from my national station with the kids within earshot. Did nobody listen to the song before they decided to broadcast it? Clearly not.. The sooner 2fm is sold off the better.

There have been a few threads recently moaning about how presenters these days are just media wannabes with no clue about music.

    Then you post the above.

I never said I wanted one of the "twits" to replace him. He was never a crowd puller. He's managed to lose a shed load of listeners on his new show. He replaced a show that was the most listened to music show on 2fm over the weekend with a watered down version of what's on RTE1 at the same time. If he was man enough (and had the pull that some people think he has at RTE) he would have told the powers that be to leave things as is. Roll on the next round of JNLRs to see if they prove me right or wrong.

2fm have ads for Tubridys " spelling bee" all over the place , really that sums up 2fm , they have lost touch with reality.

It is outrageous that tax payers money is being spent on that station, Dan Healy has confirmed it was (yet again) loss making in 2014. This is it's 7th year in a row losing money.

yeah. the sooner its sold off because a song with a bit of bad language was played. turn it off or tune to something else. 2fm isn't going to be sold off because of something as non issue as this

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

There's a number of stations who play only the semi clean radio edits if any radio edit at all now - you may need to stick to Lyric in the car...

I stopped listening to RTÉ 2fm Radio some time ago. While I admire those presenters who have enjoyed huge popularity and managed to remain unique and relevant down through the decades, it seems pointless and out of place keeping veteran DJs Larry Gogan and Dave Fanning on a station that has decided to focus mainly on just today's music. I'm not saying Larry Gogan or Dave Fanning have absolutely no role in today's broadcasting scene - they would fit far better on one of the other RTÉ Radio channels such as RTÉ Radio 1 or on digital station RTÉ Gold or perhaps one of the independent commercial radio stations.

Moving Larry from weekdays to weekends was never going to be the solution as this was done previously only for Larry to end up back Mon-Fri in a later relaunch! Head of RTÉ 2fm must surely come in for some criticism here as he should not have left veteran presenters become more & more irrelevant after such a major revamp of the station.

Interesting observation - I hear ex-Westlife and RTÉ 2fm DJ: Nicky Byrne is the new face of the all new National Lottery TV Show on RTÉ One TV from January. The Winning Streak show will be shifted to a summer time slot with Marty Whelan. Premier Lotteries are the new national lottery company owners and they want a whole new show and plan on increasing prices as the lottery has been losing a lot of revenue in recent years.

2FM are running special programmes over the christmas where some presenters 'tear up the playlist' and play their own choices. it wasnt long ago 2FM never even had a playlist. sad what the station has become.

Was it around about 2006 2fm first got a playlist ?

I would be amazed if 2FM only first starting using a playlist from the mid noughties onwards. Surely this is wrong unless 2fm stopped using one for a certain period and then re-introduced it again? There were times in the 80s and 90s where the station had a certain format that meant certain songs aired so many times throughout the day/week apart from specialist shows like Dave Fanning's old show. If you heard an older classic you were guaranteed to hear that same classic a few times that week!

in the 80s / 90s the chart stuff would have got played though all shows could play what they wanted after that. maybe someone could confirm this who worked there at the time?

Gareth O'callaghan defently played whatever he wanted to on his afternoon show, dito with Tubridy on breakfast who used to play The Beatles and Frank Sinatra almost every morning.

Gareth O'callaghan defently played whatever he wanted to on his afternoon show, dito with Tubridy on breakfast who used to play The Beatles and Frank Sinatra almost every morning.

I still think there was a regular playlist pattern across most shows:
This is probably a typical 2fm weekday schedule circa: 1993-1995ish

    06:00 Early Breakfast Show
07:00 2FM Breakfast Show with Ian Dempsey featuring "Jimmy"
09:00 Gerry Ryan - RYANLINE (Brenda Donohoe, Barbara Jordan & Terence)
12:00 Larry Gogan incl: The Golden Hour/Just-A-Minute Quiz/Chart Replay
3:00 Gareth O'Callaghan in the afternoon incl: original Mrs.Brown's Boys
    5:00 Drivetime with Barry Lang
7:00 2FM Hotline with Tony Fenton (Hitlist published in Evening Herald)
8:00 Dave Fanning - specialist show showcased new Irish rock/pop music
10:00 Ten to Midnight - Aidan Leonard
12:00 Moloney after Midnight - with Mike Moloney incl "Emylia go lightly"
    02:00 Nightime 2FM with Gerry Wilson/Bob Conway

The only shows that would have escaped the Music Playlist would have been Gerry Ryan (as Talk Show) Dave Fanning and Mike Moloney. Even Larry Gogan would have played chart hits as The Golden Hour was only 60 minutes in what used be a 3 hour show at one stage. Incidentally, Larry used also host the 2FM Irish Top Thirty Chart Show at the weekends for many years as well.

Barry Lang was gone by about '85, never mind '95.

The rest is pretty accurate though I'd say.

Well thanks for the thumbs up as this is based on memory as I was a regular 2FM listener in those days. Barry Lang was there in some shape or form until 1998. I think his last show was a Drivetime slot. After he left 2FM he became an airline pilot and I think he is now based out of Dubai.

You are correct, Barry Lang was there in the drive time slot till the late 1990's. If I recall correctly, Aidan Leonard took over from Lang and Dusty Rhodes took on Aidan's night time slot. Tony Fenton moved into the afternoon slot around the same time as O'Callaghan moved to breakfast after Ian Dempsey's departure.

Gerry Wilson/Bob Conway weren't playlisted AFAIR. I was in college around the mid 90's and ended up doing project work over night a few times. Both guys played some great and more unusual music at that hour of the morning. Certainly not a whiff of The Macarena and it's ilk that was doing the rounds on the charts at the time.

Yea I stand corrected, he was there until 1998.

For some reason I always thought he left the station in the early to mid 80s.

Sure nobody died anyway :) Maybe you mixed him up with another one of the early DJs at the old RTÉ Radio 2? Maybe you had Vincent Hanley (Fab Vinnie) or Jimmy Greeley or someone else in mind that left the station in the mid-late 1980s. Jimmy Greeley's last stint on the old RTÉ Radio 2 was in the old 09:00am - 11:30am slot however; he then moved from Radio 2 across to a special temporary radio service launched entitled "Millenium 88FM Radio" in Dublin City when the city celebrated it's 1,000th anniversary in 1988. This was the big chance for one rising star who had been doing night time radio 5 nights a week (Mon-Fri) on a programme called: "Lights Out" and the man was the late Gerry Ryan. He then took Greeley old slot but it was now to run from 09:00 - 12noon and the rest is history. Incidentally, Jimmy Greeley never returned to Radio 2 but had still been working for RTÉ and I recall him doing a lot of work as a continuity announcer and voice over artist before eventually doing work for one of the independent commercial Dublin stations. His last gig was probably as part of the first launch of multi-city independent commercial station 4FM where he ended up in the newsroom if I recall.

Barry Lang came across as a naturally pleasant sounding voice on the air - but the only thing was he usually had to squeeze too many tracks into his hour that he would end up having to cut short or talk all over the intro and/or ending of songs on a regular basis as he used be fairly busy reading out loads of requests & dedications particularly during his stint on the hugely popular Hotline on the station. If I am not mistaken, I think they extended the Hotline and brought it forward to an earlier start time of 6:30pm finishing at 8:00pm but I can't remember if this was during Barry Lang or Tony Fenton's time in the hot seat!

Around March 1989 came the relaunch of RTÉ Radio 2 and with it a new fresh name and branding identity: 2FM and the shows that survived included the 12month old Gerry Ryan Show and Dave Fanning Show was still big not to mention Larry Gogan and his 3 hour stint 5 days a week! Those DJs were like major stars because they had huge audience and influence especially in the days before the independent commercial stations arrived as the pirate stations were constantly being raided and having to duck and dive every so often. Happy Days listening!
