Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah, but the increase in voters is across the country. The "fault" (in a general sense) is also with the people who voted later but they're also basing it on what they managed to do last time - one expects to be able to vote if you arrive with 20 minutes to go. I rarely turn up to polling stations with more than five minutes or ten minutes to go, I'm usually aware that there might be a problem. The obvious solution though would have been precisely what Mandelson mentioned - close the doors as you're supposed to do but get them all in the hall so they can vote. It's never arisen before as a problem so I suspect that the returning officers didn't really know what to do.

And while an increase in voters typically suits the opposition, this election has been so close that everyone knows there's a greater chance that their vote could count and make a difference. That gets an increase in voters for all parties. It's been almost two decades since people have had that feeling about their vote in a national UK election and that makes a difference.

Wait and see I guess!

Yes indeed. I'm looking forward to reading the report from the election commission, they're already going gaga with the statements.

I hail the returning officer in Birmingham though, Mr pack em in and close the doors so they can vote, he should get a medal for knowing exactly what to do.

The worst thing is that he'll probably get reprimanded for doing that!

UUP are, effectively, the Tory party in NI.

Plus they will be lucky to win 1 seat. I can't see them being a big consideration. The DUP hold all the aces at the moments.

It's a death knell for Reg Empty. Can't see them getting a seat at all, their only chance was Sylvia Herman who removed herself from the party given the link with the Conservatives.

If the DUP hold the balance of power it'll make for very interesting times up here.

If Clegg hold's the balance of power, he need's to rearrange the electoral system. He won't be PM, he does have the chance to be the most influential politician in the last 20 years of UK politics.

I must say I am appalled that people are being forced to queue for hours at some polling stations. I literally walked in, name crossed off a list, handed voting sheet, marked X, put into box and walked out. This was at 19:00ish this evening and took less than 2 minutes. I think I would went home if I had to queue for anything more than 1/2 hour and decide to do postal voting next time.

Clegg is Orange Book Lib Dem as is Vince Cable and others. The sandals are long since in retreat.

Vince Cable used to be a Labour member - wonder who he really prefers as a coalition partner?

Not sure about that. Labour are the parties of the Unions, the Lib Dems would not be.

    From thier manifesto:
We set out in this manifesto a clear plan to bring the budget back under
control, being honest about the tough choices we need to take. We will cut
taxes for millions of working people and pensioners, paid for by making
sure that the very wealthy pay their fair share and that polluting air travel is
properly taxed. We will boost the state pension by immediately restoring
the link with earnings growth. Not really the time or place to be discussing policy though.

Not exactly the rhetoric of the far left!

Anyways this is not really the time and place for policy analysis. :) We have had enough of that. Tonight is about numbers, lots and lots of numbers and cool graphs.

Jenny Watson of the British electoral commission just got slated on BBC for the handling of the election.

Very tough on her, but an important exercise of democratic accountability I think.

4% swing to SF there as they hold it.

Indeed. Dimbleby was pointed and tough but justifiably so.
ITV have Labour on 6 seats - WTF?
I suspect they're increasing totals based on tallies or similar, neither Sky nor the BBC are moving the figures up like ITV are. ITV's news service isn't what it was a decade ago either.

    Belfast result:
Naomi Long just elected in Belfast East for Alliance ahead of Peter Robinson. 27% swing to Alliance.

Yes but the independent who stood last time round and pulled 11000 odd votes didn't stand this year.

East Belfast to come in soon.... word is it's 50/50 between Peter Robinson and Naomi Long. C'mon Naomi :D

Seems like Naomi Long may have polled 1500 votes more than Robinson. He had a 5000 vote lead.

    This from BBC

0043: BBC reporter Danny Carpenter in York says hundreds of postal ballots have gone missing in the city. The problems are being blamed on a printing error and a temporary closure at the local postal sorting office. In York Outer, the Lib Dems had a notional majority of just 203, meaning the missing votes could have a significant impact and pave the way for a losing party to challenge tonight's result in the courts.

There will be legal challanges its fair to say.
