Yes, I admit it: I actually voted for that disgusting, smug, smirking fat-cat Pat Rabbite in the 80's (1987? Gen. Elec.). I shudder to think about it.

I thought it was a vote for left-wing policies.

This is the 'journey' that those original Sinn Féin people like Rabbit and de Rossa have made: from Sinn Féin to Official Sinn Féin, to Workers' Party, to Democratic Left, to Labour Party (and Eoghan Harris one step further as advisor to Fine Gael and the UUP).

They are now implementing or advocating Ultra-Conserative IMF, World Bank austerity policies.

It would make one despair of 'politics'.

This is where people go wrong. You see, unlike most other jurisdictions there is no "Left" and "Right" in Ireland. The Left is exactly the same as the Right only with more public-sector neckbeard types on the television looking for pay-rises.

Hah! I took out Knight Rider (massive dose of horse-laxative in Glen Larson's coffee) as soon as Hasselhoff started doing this Jaysis singing towards the end of each episode.

And this is where Irish politics fail. The idealist "left" never gain a majority, just enough to have some input, and then when they fail to deliver 100% due to the limits of coalition their supporters abandon them for some other leftist party. In the meantime the populist Fine Gael/Fianna Fáil enjoy the majorities and the left never make inroads into them.

Rather than turning your ire on those on the left who end up operating in the real world, turn your ire on those who keep electing Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael candidates despite them never actually standing for anything other than whatever will get them elected.

You can't vote Fianna Fail, whose close links to the construction financial complex nearly destroyed the country.

You can't vote Labour, who rubber-stamp current governments tax tax tax policies, without regard for earnings.

You can't vote Sinn Fein, no experience and a shady violent past.

You can't vote independent because you do not know what they will do or support or vote for.

Now Fine Gael are looking impossible to support in any forthcoming election.

Are there any decent politicians left out there?????

    What they have done wrong:-
No proper housing policy or coherent plan going forward.
No proper jobs plan to get our unemployed people working again at proper liveable rates.
No appropriate tax strategy to tax people based on ability to pay.
Disastrously planned and directed Health Services.
Marginalised Teaching profession for young teachers starting out many of them casualised and going from one temp position to another.

In that case, I take it you have decided to run for election yourself?

And the left never make promises they can keep because they know they won't get in anyway. What left leaning promises from the likes of people before profit are actually adaptable?

At least you didn't give your nunmber 1 to Mary Harney OP.

She being from the same constituency as Rabbitte.

Voting for Rabbitte is no great shame in comparison to her, bad and all as Labour are now.

their is a " left " in ireland but they are pretty tiny politically , their is no " right " at all

we have an enormous middle of the road watery ( believe in nothing ) centre

we are a deeply unidealogical people

i put the ( unjustifiable IMO ) current dissatisfaction with labour down to the general fickleness of liberals

would never vote labour but i dont see the logic in current polls

I had a vote in the Dublin South West constituency. I'm proud to admit that I used to vote for Mary Harney. In the last election I voted for Brian Hayes of FG with my 2nd preference going to Pat. I'd be happy to vote for any of them again. Hard-working public servants who understand pragmatism and have to work within the confines of economic circumstances.

Certainly a more realistic choice than some Sinn Feinner or Socialists promising the sun, moon and stars. Usually some tried drivel about burning bondholders. They appear to have come up with a magic solution where no services have to be cut if we just tax the shíte out of 'the wealthy'; the wealthy being a nebulous grouping who make more money that they do.

Pat Rabbite has given more to this State than most people.

i sort of like pat rabbite , he probably thinks he,s brighter than he actually is but he doesnt play the " lick arse politican " game which turns some off and is viewed as arrogant

as for the hard left like PBP etc , no doubt they mean well but were they in power , they would focus entirely on equality instead of growth , they would no doubt reduce inequality but if equality is your only goal , the standard of living of everyone must go down and personal freedoms must also be reigned in due to the nesscesery required increase in state control , equality appears to be an end in itself for the hard left and their media cheerleaders like vincent browne etc

irish people have no idealogy for the most part so we are never going to see that kind of left wing idealogy enforced here , we wont see the american free market idealogical approach here either of course
