Can someone explain about repeating the leaving cert?

I'm a going to sound mad now but bear with me.
I'm 17 in 5th year and I hope I stay medicine in the future, I'm realising that it's unlikely I'll get in on my first go so I'm already preparing to repeat, sadly our career guidance councillor doesn't like to be asked questions (not really a job for it) so I'm left to posting on the boards for wisdom.
Can someone explain about repeating the leaving cert? Can I keep points from my previous sitting?

I'm realistically looking in the region of 480 but I need 550 so I'm wondering is there anyway I could just get my bad subjects out of the way? And focus on points?..

Is there anyway to realistically prepare for a repeat in leaving cert in 5th year?..

I you should just focus on doing your best at your first shot at the leaving..... if you keep up that mentality you'll be delaying you're study for another year !!!

I know wheeee your coming from but don't worry I'm still plodding along at the study!

I was thinking of actually doing OL maths Irish and French, getting maths out of the way at the end of 5th year (as they do in Yeats) and only going into a few classes of Irish and French because currently I'm at a B/C grade but I need 90%..

And I was thinking I taking up home ec (ties in with biology) and possibly economic is outside of school (I think a teacher at my school teaches it but isn't as a subject)
Sounds mental but I realise I probably won't be getting an A1 in Irish, Maths or French but in Biology, Geography, business, home ec and economics it would be a serious possibility

For points for Medicine you have to have all your points AND all of your subject requirements in one sitting, so you can't get around doing maths/ Irish/ French one year and the other subjects the next year. You have to do the whole lot in one year (and in a repeat year) for Medicine.

    Thanks for clarifying that!
Would it be a possibility to do OL in those subjects and simply pass and take up other subjects which is have a higher chance of getting the points?

If you are counting 6 HL subjects for points which is what realistically has to happen for medicine you would have to take 6 HL and those 3 at OL. Nine subjects is a lot of work even if you are looking at only getting a bare pass in 3 of them

I've talked with teachers as they said I'm looking at about 65% if I continue doing my part maybe more if I do a bit more study (not impossible as I'm only doing basic study as of now and more for tests of course)
So I'll see how I'm going but I should be ok points so long as I don't slack off!

Have you asked about doing medicine as a graduate? A girl I went to school with didn't get medicine so she went for a Science degree, specialising in Biology or Biomedical or something like that. After 4 years and top marks in that degree, she transferred into 3rd year medicine. It took her an extra couple of years over a standard six-year medical degree, but she's a doctor now and loves it :) Maybe email all the universities that offer medicine and ask them about this option?

Graduate Entry Med is very expensive, if you can get undergraduate go for it. Even if it means a repeat it's easier in the long term.
