Sorry to sound harsh, but why would you apply to do a course where you don't know the career opportunity/details of the course?!. You should really download or grab a prospectus and look up the course before asking others to tell you about it. Just imo
excuse me i do know what careers i get out of it but just looking for someone who is doing the course. And i didnt ask for ur opinion did I???? So f**k off and actually do something with u life ... grrr

    Hi,

I am hoping to apply to the Post Grad in Primary Teaching in Mary Immaculate for the year 2013/2014. As it does not start until January, I was wondering if the accomodation process is different?

Also, a lot of the time is spent away from the college on Teaching Practice so is it possible to stay somewhere that one only pays for the weeks they are there?

    Thank you :)

Most postgrads organise houses independently as far as I know. Very few (if any) go into the usual college or private student accommodation (like City Campus). I'd doubt you'd be able to organise anything where you only have to pay while you're there. And you'd be around for most of the time anyway. I think in your first semester only 2 out of 15 weeks would be spent on TP.

    Hey FiveSpice!

Your best option in terms of weekly payment would be digs (i.e. living with a family in a house). I know a few people (postgrads included) who have stayed in places where weekly payment is given for only the weeks they have been there. Comes in handy for regular TP placements between home and Limerick! It really depends on the people offering the accommodation though...

If you're interested, there should be a list of names offering digs on the Mary I and SU websites. If not, Student Services will also be able to lend a hand!

Hi I have a few questions regarding Mary I hopefully someone will be able to help me. :)

I've just finished my Leaving and I have the B.Ed in Primary Teaching and Psychology down first on my CAO, followed by just Primary Teaching. The LC went well and it looks like I could get the points for the B.Ed and Psychology course, however I have a few questions about it.

Is the course tough? Psychology is something which has always fascinated me but I also want to have a good time in college and not be overworked. How many hours a week/extra assignments could I be expecting? Would I still be able to go out a couple of times a week? I know I want to be a teacher and I mightn't ever even decide to study further in the field of psychology, and I don't want to do a load of extra work for nothing.
Which course do you think would be the better option for me? Also, in the B.Ed and Psychology do you have a lot of contact with regular B.Eds or are you just confined to making friends in the B.Ed and Psychology group?

Also, I have booked my accommodation on-campus at Mary I. Is this a good place to live and make friends in first year? What's the nightlife like overall at Mary I?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

You will definitely have more work. But because the course is changing, I wouldn't be able to say exactly how much more. It's safe to say that at times you will more than likely have quite a different workload to the B.Eds.

B.Eds and B.Ed Psychs are not meant to mingle. That rule is enforced almost as strictly as the gender segregation one.

If you're talking about the Res block, I know people who made very good friends there. You can't but make friends when you're practically living on top of each other.

Nope. Well at least in my year (going into the third) the class reps told us to stay away from the b.ed and psychs so as not to distract them from their studies.

Yep, I remember I got such a paddlin' when I first spoke to a B.Ed in first year...I had to wear a sign around my neck for weeks... Never again!:(

New to this and Just finished the LC 2012! I have primary teaching in Mary I down as my first choice on the CAO! With the new changes to the course, is it true in saying you no longer need to pick subjects in your first year to concentrate on? eg. Music and English. Instead, you do many subjects?! as it is in places like Marino. :/ Little confused. Not much info on the new changes on the website and not really sure of what the course involves. Been searching everywhere! Appreciate the help in advance. :)

Also, I was gonna do an arts degree in UCD if I don't get the points for primary teaching. However, is there a way in which I could do the arts degree(Joint honours-Spanish and Music) and then get into primary teaching...like a post-grad in Mary I? Anyone know anything about that? :)

  • Company Representative Posts: 195 Verified rep MISU Office

    Hi BH7

Yes, its true you won't pick subjects in first year. In the "old" B Ed you used to do an arts subject (3 in first year) as well as your teaching modules. You will still have specific lectures on how to teach every primary school subject.

You can do 1 specialisation from 2nd year onwards but you will still be doing compulsory modules all the way up to 4th year. This specialisation can be arts or education based. So you could do a music (arts) specialisation where the modules covered are similar to those which would be covered in an arts degree. Or you could do a music education specialisation where modules would be focussed on teaching music in the classroom (in addition to lectures everyone receives on music education).

Or you can opt not to do a specialisation and take a mixture of arts and education modules.

Yes, there is also the option of doing an arts degree and then doing a primary teaching postgrad.

If you're applying to the college through the CAO, your results will go through automatically.

Yes they could. When I log onto my student portal all of my LC results are up on it. So obviously the college has access to the results too. Not that they'd have any reason for looking at them anyway. Is there any particular reason you're concerned about it?

It's a bit of a mess really, my parents decided to go ahead and pay a deposit on accommodation and I don't really want the course but apparently if I change my first choice on CAO I lose my deposit entirely? I don't really want this to happen and thus I've no idea what to do.

Your first concern is the course. Whatever you do don't let an accommodation deposit stop you putting down the course you want most. Though I think you've enough sense not to do that!

After that , I don't know what happens. There's often a waiting list for the college accommodation, so even if it's policy I don't see why they shouldn't refund the deposit.

I don't feel I would have achieved the points for it anyways. Thanks for the advice.

Hi, I've just finished my LC and have the Ed & Psyche course in Mary I on the top of my CAO, followed by Psyche in UCC at 2nd place. I am very unsure about where I'll end up in Sept, Cork or Limerick, and have not looked at accommodation. Am I naive? I would have no problem in getting accommodation in cork but because Mary I is so small, i'm afraid i'll be miles away from my college in city i am unfamiliar with.. should i go looking now even though I am so unsure? :/

For a small college, there is actually a lot of accommodation such as Courtbrack, the Res, Alandale, city campus as well as private houses on every side of the campus.

Limerick is also a relatively compact city and is easily navigable.

Hey there about the accommodation. I'm from Cork but I've primary down #1 and I was told book accommodation asap when I made the choice when the cao opened. So yeah I've ashdown booked since around April I'd say. If I get the course (please god please!!!ha) all I gotta do is pay the remainder of the fee and it's done. I remember they told me I was lucky because I got the last unbooked room there. Ashdown is very popular I hear and it's very convenient and looks great but damn I got a shock when I realised it was almost booked out so early. I know obviously a few people who've it booked won't be going there (for various reasons) but you'd really want to start sorting out something now...but yeah the person above is right, there is literally tonnes of places for accommodation nearby. You'd really wanna get a move on though just in case...

Helllo fellow corkonian ;) hmmm yeah, that's what I thought... FUDGE! I'm just afraid about paying a deposit and it being non-refundable...

Ahh fellow Corkonian!!! Great stuff... Yep I was a bit worried about the deposit situation too, *I think* mine was 500 quid and they said, which I presume is for every accommodation place, that they'd refund it all minus €100 if I wrote to them and explaining the situation. I know it's €100 gone like that but look at it this way, if you get your course (which you will of course :) ) you're sorted and all thats needed to do is pay the rest of it...and in most cases you'll get that deposit back at the end of the year. I think it'd be alot better to have a place guaranteed now instead of having to worry about it in a months time when you'll be mad busy preparing for other college stuff you know? Look, I've big doubts that I won't get my #1 but I'm 100% happy that I've a place booked. It's one thing less from all the stuff stressing me out atm you know?

Lectures for undergraduates are due to start September 10th this year. This means orientation should be September 3rd-7th. Usually there are only 1 or 2 days that are compulsory, and the rest of the week is to get to know people.

Yup, and if you look at the programmes structure it's reasonably detailed. If you have any specific questions about the modules in the programme post them up, people here would have a good idea what they would entail (in a general sense at least).

Hi grantyrs, I just finished my B.Ed. with French in May. Obviously the modules in the 4 year course will differ from what I did in the 3 year, but we covered modules in language and expression (grammar, speaking, listening etc.), french philosophy, crime and justice, and the French and Love. Basically it was a mix of language and literature.

Like any of the arts subjects, you get out of it what you put in. It is possible to get by without doing too much reading (I'll admit there were a few required books on the course that I never even bought, and just looked up a few quotes in the library.) However if you want to do well, there is effort required. Most B.Ed.s will probably tell you that they spent more time working on their Arts modules than Education, and French was no different for me. Hopefully this will all change in the new course though.

If you have a good standard of French, I would have no problem recommending it as a subject choice. French films are shown once per fortnight, and you can be asked questions on these in the end-of-semester oral exam. The lecturers and tutors are very friendly and helpful, and there's a good mix of literature and language. They used to come out for a few drinks and a chat with us after the films even. Mary I gets a good few French Erasmus students too so there's plenty opportunity to practice your language.

I wouldn't worry too much about choosing your elective subjects now. You'll have a chance in September to go to lots of different lectures and see what you like before having to make a final decision.

Lectures for all courses start on Monday 10th September. Orientation Week is on the week prior to this - starting Monday 3rd September.

Students in each course are required to attend 2-3 days of Orientation Week. Whether you attend the remaining days of the week is up to you - those are optional.

You should receive a letter from the college after the CAO offers are released, with details of Orientation Week, lectures and various administration forms.

Hey everyone :) some kind girl got the paper early and scanned the points for every course in the country and posted it on the thread in the LC section. From myself viewing that, Primary Teaching has stayed at 470 and Primary and Physchology is 545.

I've 40 points over the regular B.ED so yep Mary I here I come :D A friend of mine has 475 so he'll most likely be going too while another friend has 470. He'll have to get lucky I guess. Could someone explain how they decide who'll get the places when they're bang on the points?

Edit: Here's the proof for anyone who wants it.
    https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/

I know nobody will probably see this before they check their offer or find out from themselves but honestly the excitement is too much. Hope everyone gets what they want :) Points seem pretty fair with Mary I this year....very fair.

I got in through the Gaeltacht applicant, although I got enough points through the normal way too. Will this mean anything different to me when I start?
