I'm a smoker and to be honest I don't like that they sell these because i'm the type of guy like many smokers where if I have 25 i'm going to smoke 25 (in a day).

I wonder why it's even allowed. I'd prefer if they just sold 20. It's very cynical.

Possibly loophole for tax...as fags are getting dear to buy legally now??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,354 ✭✭✭✭endacl

You could buy 40 every day.

Where does ones self-restraint enter the equation...?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭Fleawuss

The tobacco companies want to make more money out of giving you cancer and heart disease. Hurry up and smoke more for the good of the company. Fcuk you from Big Tobacco.

It's not that easy to be restrained when it comes to cigarettes, for me anyway. I just prefer if they just sold 20 and left it at that.

You feel you kinda have to buy 25 "just in case" and you end up smoking them all quickly and feeling terrible.

Didn't even think they did 25 packs here in Ireland. What was the rationale behind getting rid of the 10 packs?

It's been going for a while.

This is what I can't understand. If anything the situation now is worse. At least you could only buy 10 if you wanted back then. Now your forced to buy at least 20 and soon enough i'd say they will scrap 20 and it will be 25 or 28 only.

I miss those slender packs on ten

The more you buy the more you smoke

    They know that

But if they could ban 10 packs why not do it the other way round too? Ban packs over 20.

you can still buy 20 packs no-one is forcing you to buy them.

I fail to understand how having more cigarettes in a pack would make you smoke more.

When I smoked, I always made sure I had a constant supply: didn't mean I smoked any more, just that I never ran out or was stuck for one.

I always smoked roughly the same number each day.

If you come towards the end of a day and have a few left in a pack and feel the need to smoke them, then you have a serious problem; not just a bad habit.

What was the rationale behind getting rid of the 10 packs?

To stop kids from smoking. Like the way they made it illegal to buy any fewer than six cans to stop the young lads from getting pissed. Great minds in government.

Tax they pretty make a reasonable profit on the extra 50p etc

Dont blame them tbh, good idea whoever thought of it.

Well, didn't the Govt. remove 10 boxes to discourage people from smoking and they raise the price every Budget as an incentive to give up smoking.
Increasing the size of the box is probably the cigarette company's way of helping you quit too.

Government and big businesses are only looking out for your interests.

    What?

The extra money is not taxed so the supplier and seller make a better profit on smokes.

Production costs would be minimal and they would get them back quickly.

Apparently, along with the increase in pack size they secretly swapped currencies.

What do you mean its not taxed? do you think there is a set amount of tax per packet or something? in which case why not sell packs of 200?

When they announce increases in duty in the budget they usually are just estimates, like if they say the excise on a pint of beer or or measure of spirits has gone up 5cent. If the beer is 10% or spirits are 90% they are usually going up more, the estimate is on commonly bought pints like 4.3% beer or 37.5% -40% spirits.

you can see the real figures here.

I do that too. If I have 5 or 3 left I'll go and buy another pack. I only started a month ago and I'm gonna try my hardest and give them up in the new year. Seriously though... The hit you get when u have one. I probably won't miss it though. Wish I never started in the first place

It's still a significant number of people from across all sections of society, although I would concur with you that it seems to be more prevalent in the lower income demo.

They also do 23,24 and 29 packs of Cigs.

Its because of the tax/vat in Ireland Vs the price of Tobacco. They're trying to get around it.
Can you explain this more? maybe I am missing something. I would ask the same as I asked the other poster

When will they be banned. 15-20yrs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,069 ✭✭✭✭My name is URL

These never existed here before the sale of 10 packs were made illegal. It's a giant fcuk you to legislators and anti-tobacco lobbyists

Same goes for those new fangled 'limited edition' fancy looking packs. Never a thing until plain packaging was bandied about as an idea.

They're dead right imo. If the government were serious about reducing smoking figures they'd do more than introduce meaningless measures like that which do nothing other than placate the anti-smoking brigade

They cant legally sell a pack of cigs under €10, or whatever it comes to now under government levy.

They can afford to and want to sell them under that price. So the cost difference is compensated with the extra cigarettes in the pack. It also then makes people think, well why get 20 Marlborro when I can get 24 Silkcut for the same price, or sometimes even cheaper.
So you DO actually think there is a set amount of excise per pack. If there was why not have packs of 200. Answer -because it is not per pack, as in the link I gave.

The media dumb it down, like I mentioned about beer and spirits. The duty on a "bottle" of wine would be another, they cannot simply make 5L bottles and charge the same, it goes up accordingly. The media an usually the minister dumb it down and base it on the typical 750ml bottle, since if they quoted the actual rates in % and hetcolitres etc people would not have a clue what it means without a calculator and knowlegdge of how to work it out, some excise is not based on exact % but can have ranges it falls under.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/oireachtas/budget-2016-d%C3%A1il-votes-to-increase-duty-on-cigarettes-by-50c-1.2390770
The Government had an overwhelming majority in the first vote on the Budget which was in favour of a 50 cent increase in the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes.
The price increase comes into effect from midnight, setting the retail cost for most brands at €10.50 a packet with excise charges and Vat amounting to €8.37 of the total

Typical smoker mindset I'm afraid (been there, done that)..."I can't now, too busy in work, college" or "Christmas is coming up so time to party - I'll quit after it!" The things are so bloody addictive, it's insane. But quitting in January is not the best idea...it's such a downer after the parties etc of Xmas that it makes it even harder to quit IMO.

If your scared of the withdrawals, get a vaporiser. Did the trick for me.

Sounds like any addiction tbh, only smoking seems more difficult because it's an acceptable addiction.

Wonder what would happen if they were only available from specialist tobacco stores, and only in boxes of say 200 or more. Would it weed out the social/occasional smokers and stop people from starting due to the high initial cost, or just drive more towards buying illegal and counterfeit cigarettes?

Probably just boom the criminal trade.

That's the last thing we need.

If people want to smoke, let them smoke.
I'm only against doing so in public places.
