Sorry slightly off topic but if flying with just 1 bag for hand luggage are you also allowed to bring a laptop in a laptop case or is this counted as another bag ?

It would be counted as a 2nd bag.

Who are you flying with? Airport security won't give a flying footasie about how many bags you have.

Ryanair insist the laptop goes inside the 1 case you bring on board, Aer Lingus don't. Other airlines you'd have to check with them.

Does anyone know the rules regarding laptop classification in the EU?

Apparently, 11" macbook airs don't count as laptops in the US, and you don't have to take them out for airport screening

Ah the theatre of Security, wasting resources worldwide.
two week ago guards in Las Vegas took a frosted cupcake away from a woman named Rebecca Hains as she prepared to board a flight to Boston. The frosting, you see, was “gel-like” and thus a potential security threat.

Why do they make you take the laptop out the bag?

I guess it's one of them you have no choice things. What happens if you put the laptop (in its bag) inside your carry on bag do you still have to fish it out?
