midi cable troubles

    hey. does anyone know of an adapter that will convert a 5-din cable [ie a midi cable] to a usb one? ive got a midi keyboard but no 5-din in-port on my pc.

    any help is appreciated.

    Anyway. To answer your question. You need to by a Midi interface for your comp. This runs between the comp and the MIDI keyboard. I don't know enough about this at the moment so I can't tell you much more right now. but I'll research it for you.

    They're fairly cheap. e.g this one geives you an in and an out and connects to a usb port:

    I wouldn't call that cheap.

    Tis pretty much all you can do though. It's a converter rather than an adaptor, since the two formats are not directly compatible at all.

    Considering that they could only ever hope to shift small volumes of these, and they feature active electronics, I think they are cheap. Edirol do have to recoup design, manufacturing, logistics costs, etc. I don't think Behringer do anything like this. That's the only way you could hope to get it much cheaper.

    If you want to see expensive, look at some of the other kit digital village feature in their midi i/f category :eek:

    You could always get a midi/joystick adapter, around 15-20 blips and just throw the 5 pin cable through the joystick port. Works grand if you only need 1 midi in.

    Yeah I have a cable at home which does the whole midi through the joystick port on your soundcard. Cost me 50pounds back when I bought it which was sick, but I since bought an external soundcard with midi ports on the front so i can sell it to ya if you want

    Not all PCs have joystick ports though. Banquo would need to check this and might have to factor in the cost of a PCI card as well as the cable if the PC didn't have the requisite port.

    TRY THIS it looks like just the job for you, but dont forget though that if you are using your pc for vst instruments etc youll need a decent soundcard .
