Vw passat, 02. Was driving along and oil light came on.. Checked dipstick and was 1/3 full..anyways i filled it to full and the light still on and everytime engine is turned on a warning appears to check oil.. Pretty certain is a light/switch trouble but not 100% sure.. Could it be something else..

If its yellow warning light it is probably just a faulty sensor if you have checked its ok with the dip stick. If its a red warning light it could be telling you of low oil pressure which would be something more serious and you probably shouldn't drive it.

Pressure sensor would be a red light.

Also faulty VW pressure sensors are not at all common. I couldn't tell you the last time we came across one.

Maybe you mean level sensor? As they are prone to failure and will bring on an orange/yellow light as described by the op?

When the bonnet is open does it give you a warning on the dash?

Opening and closing the bonnet resets the light. If the car doesn't know the bonnet has been opened it won't reset the light.

Disconnecting the battery for a few seconds might work.

If it's a diesel, it could be the injector seals are worn and had coked up your oil, this blocks the oil pump
Strainer, causes the light to come on. This can stop enough oil getting atound the engine and ruin it. I'd get it checked out.
