Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So you're at home when you turn on the news to RTE. There is a report about people getting attacked and eaten by the zombies. This is nationwide. What do you do? Do you sit at home or try to escape somewhere else. For me, I would stay where I am. I live in the countryside so I imagine I'd be able to sustain myself.

Are you from Cork, or in the locality?

Does this news report happen around X factor o'clock? I'd switch channels and join the rest of the zombies.

    I'm from Monaghan

Why head to cork, then? In the midst of all the chaos?

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Pat_custard

yea best of luck getting to cork from monaghan in the middle of all chaos haha

To me an island would be the safest option. Land for farming, other people on the island. There could be zombies on the island, but I could just get rid of them.

Ireland is an island. Your not making sense!

    :D

yea, I'm not disputing whether a small island of the coast would be safer than the mainland or not, just your ability to get from monaghan to Cork.

the motorway would be the fastest, but probably jammed (the M50 and M7 are slow at the best of times)

I'm talking about an island off Cork. Of course, zombies are going to be roaming Ireland

But, as you posted, they'll also be roaming your Corkonian paradise?

It would be best to avoid Dublin at the start. I live in the countryside actually, so I could actually manage to sustain myself.

'I'm near proximity to Cork city if I need any supplies.'

If Cork is trading and has supplies then you don't really need to escape anywhere?

I'd rather take my chances with the zombies than go to Cork.

Coming from Monaghan, you'd be avoiding Dublin by not doing anything at all, though! Yet you'd be happy to cross the country to find somewhere relatively isolated. Despite starting from somewhere relatively isolated? That you're familiar with?

You may have to rethink this...

Also, what is the rate of infection in this case? I'd imagine it would be exponential from the first outbreak

    What's wrong with Cork?

Lovely city, stayed there a few times with work and never had any hassle.

Plus.... Cork zombies? How annoying would that be?

    Braaaiiiinnnnzzzzzz, baaaaaiiiiiii......

I think any type of rural area, be it countryside or an island with relatively few zombies would work best.

If its highly contagious, with a big kill rate, then I would stay put for the first few days. I have enough food in the house for a week (and so do most people) maybe 2 - 3 weeks if i ration it and eat the stuff that i dont like thats left at the back of the press. I have some garden tools & equip and would spend the first day making the house secure, gathering supplies, putting water into jerry-cans & taking into attic, etc. I reckon that if you leave your house on the first day & go to a 'better' place, then you will have to do all this hardening-off when you get there, and that might be in the dark, or else you leave it to the next day (more time fo Z's to gather and get you while you are un-ready). A house is very secure against Z's.

Medium term, (after a few weeks) I would scout out a more secure location. The closer to my place the better. When I find a good one, I will have to move all my stuff & my family there, and it needs to be secure as soon as we get there. Cant spend time securing it after. I would make regular trips there before moving, fixing fences / walls, windows, barriers, loading up on fuel & equip , food, etc. A really good location might be a small island off the coast (or in Shannon), or ship @ anchor, or country estate with big wall all around, or small castle. You get the idea.

Long-term (after a year or two): Whenever the threat is at minimum, I would return to 'the land' and start my own small farm. A big estate (wall/fence all around) might do for medium term & long term).

This is my plan for the Z's. Of course, this all changes if the other survivors are hostile (like Mad Max scenario, or Waterworld) and then I need to think about defending against them (a house is not so good against them!), so maybe join a large commune ... safety in numbers!

The option to bale out to a better place is very much situationally dependant,

how far away is the 'better' option?
less than 2 hours is feasible

Is it easier to secure that location or your current one?

does the change in location afford a major advantage?

In my case i would move asap, my bug out site is far easier to defend, and has a well

    Totally agree.
Thats my plan, based on my house / location / facilities etc
It would be a different plan if I was living in a built up / urban area.
But, most people wont be currently living in the ideal location, and a move to a better place (whatever that means to your situation) will be done sooner rather than later (either in terms of hours or days, rather than weeks / months).

Anyone think that pissing off to the Aran islands would be a good idea. Be bloody tough to get there but it has a limited population and if you could get an organized crew there, it could be possible to clear the island of hostiles due to low numbers. "But fizzy, what about all the other people thinking the same thing and how would you get there?" and to this I answer "I dunno....." and promptly have my face eaten.

Look. There's no point in going anywhere. Stay at home and you can pop out for a cornetto when supplies dwindle. Zombies can be easily kept at by by the simple means of chucking 12" vinyl albums at them.

I'd stay home and fortify the apartment as much as possible, though i'd raid the shop across the street for supplies as soon as i saw the report. It's about 2 minutes away, so i should be able to get in and out without too much hassle. Get plently of non perishable foods, and anything else that might be useful. Block the stairs in the apartment with some random junk (and lots of bins), and destroy the lift if i can. I've some old samurai swords in my place, so i'd sharpen them as best as i could for at least some basic defensive weapons.

My apartment would actually be ok for defense, as the stairs and hallway leading to my door could be blocked up, and i've an alternative escape route out the back, which isn't accessible from the ground floor. After the initial chaos dies out, i suppose i'd need to start scavenging and seeing if there's anyone else left alive. Possibly move to a more defensible location (the Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park maybe), though other people would probably do the same, and the chance of violence would probably be pretty high.

After that, i'd wait and see. Can't really plan without knowing more about how it pans out.

All this is assuming traditional zombies of course. If it's rage infected people or the like, i'll probably be dead within 24 hours :P

In pretty every zombie book those that try to flee die as everybody tries to do the same thing. Survivors hole up where they are until initial panic ends.

Where you are often is not your home, Trying to get home also is a good way to get you killed.
