Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I am trying to organise a writers group in Maynooth and surrounding area. The purpose of the group would be to meet and listen to each others work and offer advice. I write both poetry and short stories but have never tried to publish work. If anyone is interested, there is a lovely venue in Maynooth, the Creative Arts Centre on Coates lane, where we could meet. P.M me to discuss further, thanks.

yeah, the modules are sent to you via email and you have an assessment at the end of the module.

I handed in mine today and she said I did really well...:)

They have another on creative writing but it was about EUR 200 which is far too expensive for me.

Hi All, still trying to get a sufficient amount of people to get a writer's group started. One evening every week (or fortnight)would be great to sit and chat about our own work and take a look at the work of different poets/authors who inspire us. The setting of the Creative Arts Centre in Maynooth would be perfect as there are small rooms to use and a coffee shop. Please pm me if interested, Louise

This looks pretty cool. I know the name from somewhere? I'll have a look. Although I'm thinking of doing an intermediate Irish language course so maybe I couldn't afford both. But feel I need guidance.

Are there any writer's groups in Malahide/Swords, does anyone know? It would be nice to have coffee with people who know what you're ranting about :)

    26.11.11 Poetry Workshop with Katie Donovan 10.30am - 4.30pm
Poet Katie Donovan offers a two-day workshop for poets who are already writing but looking for a forum to share work, receive feedback and focus on what direction their work is going in. Issues will be explored such as how to trick yourself into starting a poem without self-censoring; how to pare pack the material to let the poem breathe; and how to finish a poem without throwing the baby out with the bathwater. This is not a workshop for beginners. Please bring poems with you which you want to improve and finish. The main thrust of the workshop will be honing existing work

This weekend course will address the three biggest hurdles in novel-writing - conceiving, starting and finishing a first draft. Students can submit up to five thousand words, plus an outline of the novel they are writing. The critique of this material, by both the teacher and the group, will reveal practical strategies for overcoming the loneliness of long-distance writing.

From celebrity interviews to serious reportage, from quirky stories to health issues, newspapers and magazines rely on interesting features as well as up-to-date news. But what makes a good feature? This class will take participants through every stage of producing a feature, including:

    Knowing your market
Figuring out what sort of story is right for what publication.
    Getting ideas
When deciding on features, magazines and newspapers generally need a topical hook. The class will look at how to identify news stories that could trigger an interesting feature, and how to check out the release schedules of films, music and books in order to pitch arts-related stories.
    Writing a pitch
How to approach an editor without annoying them.
    Researching a piece
Every feature needs plenty of sources. The class will look at how to find the best people for your piece, as well as looking at the most efficient ways of doing background research.
    Interviews
How to conduct an interview and write it up.
    Writing the piece
How to structure a piece and stick to your wordcount.

    Date: November 19th 2011
    Length: 1 day
    Fee: €75
    Guest facilitator: Anna Carey

It is often said that all writing is rewriting, and this is perhaps most true of screenwriting, where the dramatic, narrative, structural and technical demands of visual storytelling need to be taken into account.
This intensive, one-day course is open to anyone who is looking to move deeper into the screenwriting process and will explore:
    • Cinematic tools and techniques
    • Dramatic structure
    • Writing the individual scene and connecting scenes
    • Writing dialogue for screen
    • Show, don't tell: the study of dramatic behaviour
    • Character development
Participants are invited to bring the first draft of a short script or screenplay idea to workshop the next stage of re-writing. Combining exercises, feedback sessions and numerous examples, the course is intended to equip participants with the tools necessary to bring out the best in their screenwriting and see their first draft advance to the next stage.

    Date: December 3rd 2011

    Length: 1 day
    Fee: €75
    Guest facilitator: Virginia Gilbert

Give your creative self a bit of TLC for 2012!

A fiction workshop with Celeste Auge kicks off on Tuesday 17th January at the Galway Arts Centre. It runs from 7pm to 8:30pm for 10 weeks, and costs €110. There are still some places left - contact the Galway Arts Centre at 091-565886 to book your spot.

Classes are fun and interesting: there will be a mix of writing exercises and discussion, with participants giving and receiving feedback on the fiction writing assignments they complete at home. The workshop is a supportive environment, and provides a weekly deadline to help get those creative impulses down on the page.

Finishing up with work in a month and doing a bit of travelling. During this time I would like to do a creative writing course. As a classroom based course is not an option I have been looking at correspondence courses and came across the one that Kilroy’s are offering.

    http://www.kilroyscollege.ie/course.php?courseid=6

At €645 it is quite expensive but would be glad to pay it if it is a good course.Has anyone any feedback on it or others?
    Many Thanks
    S

PS.Not sure on rules of thread resurrection on this forum, so hope this is ok.

I know nothing about the course or the college, but 645e for a creative writing course?!! Save yourself some money - get some books on CW, check out some of the many free online resources, post to forums like this one, and look for others who'd like to form a local writers' circle.

Want to get back into writing and knowing my personality I would be better starting with a weekend course, sharing with others to spur me on. Anyone aware of any weekend courses anywhere in Ireland or the UK which are good. Have tried googling but there does not seem to be much out there.

Haven't used them but the Irish Writer's Centre have a decent reputation.

Just a quick word of warning to anyone who is thinking of joining the Creative Writing Group in Kevin Street Library on Thursday afteroons.

This group believes in the fluffy bunny style of critique. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. The result is that no-one there gets better. I went back after two years away, and found they were all writing in exactly the same way as before.

When I tried to point out a few realities about getting published to the woman who has written a novel, I got shot down, and was informed that a writer should express herself the way she wants, and considering the reader was just pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Ouch. If you consider your reader to to be the lowest common denominator then you don't deserve any readers.

I don't think there's any danger of any of them getting published this century.

I think a bloody-minded attitude of "I'm going to create the work I want to create" is not always such a bad thing (assuming there's some sort of talent there to back it up!) Trying to second-guess the reader can be counter-productive at times.

To take a non-literary example, I don't think someone like Mark E. Smith has ever cared very much about what some abstract "listener" might want to hear, and now has a significant cult following, and a large body of critically-acclaimed and influential work to show for it.

As I read one writer asking recently (can't remember whom), why can the reader make demands of the book, but the book can't make demands of the reader?

I think, in that example, the audience was Mark E. Smith. He was writing just for himself, and the popularity was just an added bonus.

Making your own path, to hell with the critics, is fine and if you can do that and still make popular work, then more power to you. But if that's what a person wants and they don't care about other people's opinions, then why are they reading/distributing their work to a writing group?

I think some of those things can basically be just mutual pat-on-the-back societies (not the good ones though).

Still looking for a creative writing weekend or night course that is not in Dublin city centre because of cost of parking. Weekend could be anywhere in Ireland, night class could be Dublin 15, Dublin 11, Meath, Kildare.
