I stayed in Patong beach and it was nice. Bang Tao was a lovely beach I stayed in June, only about 8 resorts on a good stretch of beach. The negative would be the lack of anything else around there. How long are you going for?

I'd second Bangtao. I can recommend the Dusit Thani....stayed there in Sept. It's a nice clean beach on your doorstep and it's within walking distance of the nearest village.

Patong Beach itself is quite nice except for annoying vendors and those para-gliders towed by setkis. Karon beach would be a better destination but really the entire island of Phuket is a joke with much higher costs than the rest of Thailand, the Taxi and Tuk-Tuk mafia will charge you taxi rates similar if not worse than Dublin. If you want to get out of the resort or explorer further than walking distance take your driving license and get a rental car with full maximum insurance. Oh and don't dream of renting a Jetski anywhere in Thailand or you will be scammed for alot of money. Phuket is like Ibiza or Malaga for Aussies and Kiwis, way over commercialised with a lager-lout culture there.
